The list author says: "Working in a second-hand record shop in London, as you can imagine, you come across mountains of CDs - and being a voracious music fiend - I've bought and loved hundreds of re-issues over the last few years.
But some just stand head and shoulders above all the rest. Many of these titles are well known, but others are obscure (I've reviewed most of them in detail).
Here's some suggestions and why they're recommended..."
"2009 2CD DELUXE EDITION reissue of his 1973 Island Records etheral folk/rock masterpiece. There's many fully formed outtakes equal to the album tracks on Disc 2 - they're shockingly good. Has a beautiful Paschal Byrne remaster too. See detailed review..."
"Part of the Universal's ORIGINALS series (over 100 titles - mostly jazz, funk, fusion, soul etc) - this 1972 US soul masterpiece on Cadet Records has been given a beautiful 2008 Gavin Lurssen remaster. An absolute gem. See detailed review…"
"A July 2009 British reissue in a card wrap with a new booklet of his last 3 albums - "The Impossible Bird" (1994), "Dig My Mood" (1998) and "The Convincer" (2001). Witty, sly, brill – one of England’s great songwriters. See detailed review..."
"June 2009 Polydor reissue of their 1981 album - fantastic Stephen Marcusson remastered sound quality - carries over the same 'long' version of "Slave" that the Virgin 1993 CD had. See detailed review..."
"August 2005 remaster of her stunning 2nd album on Cadet Records from 1969. Charles Stepney production (see also Terry Callier above) - has a beautiful muscular remaster - musically it's righteous soul. A treat if you don't already know it..."
"June 2009 Japan-only SHM-CD of his huge 1980 album on Warner Brothers/Qwest. Produced by Quincy Jones, this CD variant has truly glorious sound quality - and musically the R'n'B and Funk tunes still stand up. Pricey as an import for sure, but worth it (SHM-CDs play on all CD players). See detailed review…"
"1997 2CD USA-only Mobile Fidelity ULTRADISC-2 reissue. Features the 'full' 2LP compliment that appeared on both UK & US issues of this 1972 Double-Album Book set. The booklet inside the card wrap apes the original artwork too. It has great sound, but like most MF issues, it costs. See detailed review…"
"April 2009 2CD set on Edsel (of the UK) which gathers up their MCA debut LP "Show Your Hand" (1973) with the more famous "AWB" LP and adds on "The Clovis Sessions" - outtakes from that 1974 funky masterpiece. Stunning little reissue. Hugely underrated band. See detailed review..."
"2009 long-delayed 3CD haul of his extraordinary recording legacy - lots of stuff off the 6LP 1979 "Complete" box set finally seeing the light of CD day. Remastered, tastily presented and reasonably priced too. See detailed review..."
"2006 2CD Rhino set which compiles their wicked 1971 debut album "Crazy Horse" with their less than great follow-up LP "Loose" from 1972. But it has really ace outtakes from their debut, a nice remaster and lovely Rhino packaging. See detailed review..."
"March 2009 2CD DELUXE EDITION of the iconic and much-loved 1969 reggae compilation on Trojan Records of the UK. There were 8 volumes in the series until 1973, but along with its wonderful predecessor, this peach practically introduced Sixties Reggae and Ska to the whole of England’s youth. Chock full of goodies. See detailed review..."
"A white man who sounded like Otis Redding's younger brother, Hinton put out this lovely soul/rock debut LP on Capricorn Records in the States in 1978. This CD of it is rare too, but sooooo good. See detailed reviews for this and an Anthology on Raven of Australia called “A Mighty Field Of Vision”."
"Once a part of the Ikettes, Bonnie Bramlett's wonderfully guttural rock/soul vocals get a great remaster on this 19-track 2008 Raven CD compilation. Fab stuff and a lot of it hard to get on CD. I just wish there was a Volume 2. See detailed review..."
"2006 Rhino CD compilation raiding the Atlantic/Cotillion/Atco vaults for unreleased goodies and finding them (mostly). There's a companion volume called "Soul Sister" which is excellent too. See detailed review..."
"2010 USA-Only Mobile Fidelity SACD Remaster with better sound than the Japanese 5” card repro remaster of a few years ago. This 1976 Warner Brothers album is a mixture of Tom Johnston’s rock with Michael McDonald’s soul-rock. I also adore Tiran Porter’s slinky “For Someone Special” on Side 2 – very Steely Dan, very cool."
"2008 CD by Kent (Ace Records of the UK). Usually classy stuff from Ace - 24 track compilation that will allow you to sequence most of her Chess singles - with many tracks being first time on CD. A really sweet soul listen. See detailed review..."
"2000 USA release which combines two of his four excellent Atlantic LPs onto 1 CD - his 4th "Patches" from 1970 and his 2nd "The Dynamic..." from 1969. Great sound and there’s huge number of tracks on here that are never on the usual “Best Of" sets. See detailed review..."
"2009 Hip-O Select 3CD set covering 1961 to 1965 with a massive 87 tracks (6 albums worth and more). Great Ellen Fitton remasters and a fully featured 30-page booklet. A Hip-O Select gem – and it’s reasonably priced too. See detailed review…"
"His 1975 3rd album for Virgin gets the long-needed 2CD DELUXE EDITION treatment in 2010 and it’s a winner. There’s a part on Side 2 where the Uilleann pipes of The Chieftains come wailing in and it’s finally got the beautiful sound it deserves…"
"A 1999 singular CD on Collectables of the USA featuring 2 rare Atlantic LPs from the late Fifties by this giant of Rhythm ‘n’ Blues music (28 tracks in all). Also features many tunes difficult to find outside of the usual “Best Of” scenario…"
"2009 2CD set from Sanctuary/Trojan Records of the UK covering 2 ultra-rare but desirable DD albums. Each LP has had loads of extras added on to give you a whopping 49 Reggae tracks in all. Superbly detailed booklet too. This is Sixties Ska music, so the sound quality is not exactly audiophile, but the music is magical..."
"1997 Rhino 2CD Deluxe Edition of his 1972 soul masterpiece with card digipak artwork that mimics the US original’s die-cut gatefold sleeve. With 2 bonus tracks on top of the 9-track album on Disc 1 - and 12 previously unreleased and alternate versions on Disc 2, Dan Hersch remastering and a 24-page booklet - this is a must buy. What a loss to music he was..."
