The list author says: "Working in a secondhand record shop in London, as you can imagine, you come across mountains of CDs - and being a voracious music fiend - I've bought and loved hundreds of re-issues over the last few years.
But some just stand head and shoulders above all the rest. Many of these titles are well known, but others are obscure (I've reviewed most of them in detail).
Here's some suggestions and why they're recommended..."
"A double-album and single CD when originally issued in 1989, this Realworld 2002 remaster is breathtaking - and if ever there was a desert island album you need to discover, then this is it... His masterpiece."
"His 1971 debut album on Atlantic given a stunning 2008 remaster. Disc 1 is the album (with all-star cast) and a slightly superfluous to requirements DVD as Disc 2. Features DVD-Audio mix as well. See review.."
"50 years ago and it still sounds astonishingly fresh - part of Universal's "Rock 'n' Roll 50th Anniversary" series of CDs. See separate review and a list of all 7 titles in the the 50th series in Listmania..."
"Beautifully remastered by the Cherry Red label in 2008, this long overdue CD sees his one album for Island Records in 1975 "Breakfast Special" and his 1976 unreleased album for Island finally get a great airing. See detailed review..."
"1968 (USA) 1969 (UK) LP on Mercury Records from the funky ELECTRIC FLAG Drummer and Vocalist BUDDY MILES. Hip-O Select's gatefold hard card repro sleeve is numbered to 3000 and superbly mastered by GARY N.MAYO. A cool 2008 reissue with original liner notes by none other than JIMI HENDRIX…"
"Their 1980 Island Records debut given a top class makeover - this 2CD DELUXE EDITION also carries those rare 7" singles & B-sides seeing the CD light of day for the first time on Disc 2 - and about time too!"
"Great 18-track compilation of their 1971-1974 Decca label material (Eric Bell line-up) - superb remastered sound quality, many tracks are rare - and cheap as chips too. See detailed track-by-track review..."
"Criminally forgotten 1st Chess LP with The Moonglows, Chuck Berry & The Flamingos providing its 12 tracks & they bolstered up by 3 more from the film. It was the 1st "Rock 'n' Roll" soundtrack and although it's short, it's a lovely evocative listen. Erick Labson remaster. See separate review and a list of the 7 titles in Universal's 50th Anniversary series..."
"Unknown bluesman is given the Rolls Royce treatment for his incredibly rare 1968 "Now Resident In Europe" LP on Blue Horizon. Respect to both the artist and all the folks at BH. See separate review and a 25 title BH list in Listmania..."
"Rare and sought-after gospel/soul/funk/righteous social consciousness album from 1970 on Elektra - loads of extras that include previously unreleased Donny Hathaway material. Superb 2007 Rhino remaster. See detailed review..."
"Their 2nd album from early 1972 on Rak Records (UK) with the hit single "Brother" on it. 2001 Repertoire CD reissue in a digipak with non-album bonuses. Superb Alexis Korner material too. See review..."
"In the absence of any of her early Warner Brothers albums being remastered, this 3CD 2005 Rhino overhaul will do nicely. Fantastic to hear her "Rickie Lee Jones", "Pirates" and "Magazine" album tracks finally given good quality sound."
"Willy DeVille and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits put out a DDD album in 1987 - this is the Australian Raven label reissue with different artwork, bonus tracks and an interview. A long deleted audiophile's wet dream. See detailed review..."
"Their wonderful 1974 self-titled 'white' album (with "Pick Up The Pieces") now given a 2CD 2004 remaster by Columbia in Europe. It's housed in a gatefold book sleeve and features the equally brill and entirely unreleased 10-track "Clover Sessions” on Disc 2. Hard to find, but both discs are essential to soul/rock lovers."
"His 2nd LP on ABC Records in 1978 given a hard card gatefold repro sleeve and inner on this 2006 US-only Hip-O Select Remaster. Beautiful songs and quality sound. They've also given the same treatment to his debut, "Careless" (see separate review)."
"All 6 of their studio albums plus a 7th Rarities set - all in superlative repro art sleeves complete even with Elektra Inner Bags. Gorgeous remastered sound and a comprehensive booklet. A genuinely GREAT 1999 box set."
"4 full album's worth of Motown rarities made available for the 1st time - beautifully packaged 2CD set with typically ace Hip-O Select remastering. Will make you want to purchase Volume 2! See detailed reviews for both..."
"Released in late 1969 (USA on Columbia) and early 1970 (UK on CBS) as a 3-sided 2LP set, I've always adored this bluesy/rockin’ mish mash. This 2004 2CD Legacy Edition remasters that double on Disc 1 adding two top outtakes (both cover versions). Disc 2 outdoes Disc 1 with a blistering unreleased 1970 live set from the Royal Albert Hall (which features an early "Frankenstein")."
"2010 CD compilation from Bear Family of West Germany. It's a 3-way foldout digipak that has a beautiful 40-page booklet and an astonishing 36 tracks (86 minutes!). This whole series is fabulous and runs to over 40 artists. Their stuff costs, but it's the best."
"2001 2CD set from Universal/Motown. 3 whole albums - "United" (1967), "You're All I Need" (1968) and "Easy" (1969) with additional tracks from the 1969 "Marvin And His Girls" LP plus 15 previously unreleased songs. Lovely 24-page colour booklet, Jeff Willens remasters. And cheap too. Check out the joy of "Two Can Have A Party"."
"2007 remaster of the 1994 "Blade Runner" soundtrack CD (film itself was in 1982). Disc 2 has Previously Unreleased Instrumentals and Disc 3 has new "interpretations" by Vangelis. Some loved this, others hated it. Personally I found the 1994 CD to be weedy sounding, so this new "Paris" remaster was welcome news."
"Their 1977 stadium/clubs live double given a 2009 2CD Stephen Marcussen remaster. Side 3 was recorded at The El Morcambo Club in Toronto and has hard rocking blues. The packaging is bog standard (garish Andy Warhol images), but the sound quality is brilliant. A largely forgotten live album that deserves another look...especially with the improved sound."
"In 2008 and 2009 Bear Family of Germany issued 10 CD compilations called "Sweet Soul Music" - a year to each (1961 to 1970). Stunning sound quality, average of 80-page booklets - genius stuff. This is the 10-track budget-priced sampler for the series. I've reviewed it and all 10 comps. Best compilations ever made??"
