This review is from: My Book of Favorite Fairy Tales (Illustrated Stories for Children) (Hardcover)
My daughter has never had more than a passing interest in the Disney princess movies (hooray!), but I began to feel that she was really missing out on some classic stories, and I couldn't imagine her getting through childhood without knowing what someone meant when they alluded to Sleeping Beauty, or wicked step sisters, and the like. On a recent trip to the library, between a litany of "Hey, Mom.."s, I was lucky enough to spy a copy of this book on the shelf. I was immediately taken by the illustrations, and the way that the stories seemed to written with a respect for the original tales. In other words, you won't find much of an overprotective, sweetness-and-light tone. My daughter, 7, especially liked the story of Snow Drop (you may know her as Snow White). She loved that in the end it is the evil queen's own madness and jealousy that does her in. The stories are the perfect length for reading to your child at bedtime, and they provide plenty of fresh, interesting detail. Many of Harbour's illustrations are little works of art, and strike the right emotional tone. For my daughter, who loves to draw, I feel it is important for her to see that illustrations can really add another layer to a story.
