Older readers of The New Yorker Magazine likely have fond memories of the cartoons of Charles Addams, which used to grace every issue. "Favorite Haunts" is one of several collections of his cartoons, published in 1976. The cartoons feature his distinctive, sophisticated and often macabre sense of humor, usually achieved by a simple drawing with a horrifying implication or a one-off allusion to literature or popular wisdom. The subjects might be as simple as two ski jumpers surprised to be passing each other in mid-air, or a group of departed souls crossing the River Styx to Hell in a boat aportioned into first, tourist, and economy classes. Addams made frequent use in his cartoons of his ghoulish Addams Family characters (of TV and movie fame) for cartoons in which the reader might have to take in the whole cartoon to get the joke."Favorite Haunts" is highly recommended, even in used condition, to fans of Charles Addams and of The New Yorker Magazine.
