Adorable little book, 60 short chapters - perfect for the Norman Vincent Peale fans,

This review is from: My Favorite Hymns and the Stories Behind Them (Hardcover)
This is such an adorable book. I first heard about it from an email explaining the story behind some popular hymns.
One email attributed the history-telling to Paul Harvey (Rest of the Story), and the other to Zig Zigglar. But upon doing a bit of research, I discovered these stories actually came from this book - My Favorite Hymns and the Stories Behind Them, by Norman Vincent Peale. This book made a great gift for my parents and grandparents. It contains over 60 short stories, as well as the hymns themselves. Some examples: * Old Rugged Cross - Written by the son of a coal miner in Michigan, 1913, in response to a radio competition. It immediately rose to #1 in the charts. * O Little Town of Bethlehem - A poem, written by a father while visiting Bethlehem. He wrote the poem for his children as a Christmas gift (1865). Upon returning to the United States, he thought it would make a good song. The melody came to him in a dream. * Abide With Me - Written by terminally ill pastor of a small country church in England, 1847. The night before he died, he he took a walk by the sea, appreciating the richness of the ocean and the crimson and gold of the sunset. "Abide With Me" was the spontaneous prayer he prayed, and recorded in his journal that night. The journal (and the song) were lost, and only accidentally discovered 15 years after his death. 150 years later, it remains one of the most popular Christian hymns in the world. * Amazing Grace - The most popular Christian hymn in history. Written by John Newton, widely known as the most brutal and notorious slave trader of the 18th Century. After a near-death experience in a hurricane, he sought council from a priest. He shut down his slave ship, got a job with the port authority, and became an anti-slave activist. Later, at age 39, he became an ordained pastor, and lived the rest of his life trying to make up for his evil past. Great stories, very touching, beautiful printing and dust jacket. I give it 5-stars.
