I love to cook and especially love to try different foods I have yet to. Whenever I go on trips away from home I am always on the hunt for cookbooks that are special in some way. They can be unique to me only, or be about a particular type of food or drink, or concentrate on a single common ingredient. Collectors are quirky. Until I found this book, my prized treasure had to be a cook book written by the late Vincent Price and his wife, of horror film fame. It's a beautiful leather bound copy with a exquisite silk tassel page marker. Nothing less than you'd expect from Mr. Price. I grew up watching his films and at the young age of 15 actually met him in person while working as a busboy in an Italian restaurant in Baltimores Little Italy. Not to mention it was a used book sale at John's Hopkins Hospital to benefit children. I had to have it.I ran across My Favorite Maryland Recipes cook book when a friend that has a copy showed it to me but wouldn't sell it to me. I priced one in Florida online for 4 times as much. I found my copy on Amazon, in the same excellent condition. I had to have it for many reasons. Being a native of Maryland, and a lover of seafood, this book has a lot of meaning to me. 1) It's signed by the author 2) It's a first edition 3) The author is the wife of one of the early governors of Maryland 3) Inspiration for the book and most of the recipes came from her Mother-in-law and Mother, whose last name happens to be the same as one of the towns on the Chesapeake Bay 4) There is a recipe for a soup using an ingredient that is now a endangered and protected species of turtles. The list goes on but mostly because it was unique and I wanted it. If you collect things you understand what it means to find something that has special meaning to you and how you must have it. If love to cook and are from Maryland well, you owe it to yourself to add this cook book to your collection. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. No special skills or techniques are required. The recipes call for basic ingredients most of the time. Now, is every recipe for every kind of dish from Maryland in here? No, but most are and as I always say, if you find a cook book that is special in some way, and then you find just one recipe in it that makes you go Mmmmm each time you eat it, then the cook book is worth any price. Enjoy.

I bought this because I'd heard of Mrs. Tawes' splendid recipes. She did not disappoint. These are simple, delicious and each time I make one I remember that I'm carrying on a great Maryland tradition. Try the Turtle Soup (Secret: I make it with chicken.)
