1.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Maurice Andre plays Haydn & Hummel. Oh wait, it's not, October 26, 2000
This review is from: Favorite Trumpet Concertos (Audio CD)
I own this CD and it clearly states that Tarr is playing the Haydn and the Hummel. This is definitely not Edward Tarr's best album. This is a horrible recording of the hummel if you ask me. My advice is to find an actual Maurice Andre Recording on the EMI label. I have one that is recorded with Berlin and Karajan. This is my favorite Hummel recording. Buy it, not this.

Unfortunately, he seems to think that Andre is the only good trumpet player in the world.

Perhaps when he gets older he'll learn better.

This is a fine CD. There were good trumpet recordings made before M. Andre and there will be more after.

I thought Amazon had a policy against multiple reviews of the same CD by one person.

4.0 out of 5 stars John Wilbraham, Edward Tarr and Maurice André, January 20, 2010
This review is from: Favorite Trumpet Concertos (Audio CD)
This album is a great resource for anyone looking for a collection of the most popular ("favorites") Classical concertos written for the trumpet. The Haydn and Hummel are Classical era concertos and the Telemann, Albinoni, Leopold Mozart (Wolfgang's father) and Vivaldi are from the Baroque. I personally feel (as a trumpet player, musician, and music educator) that these are good performances of this material; some of them are not the best available, but, overall this is an excellent collection of well-performed material. The trumpet players are not nearly as bad as some of the other reviews state, and all are world-renowned performers! Edward Tarr is a leading proponent of research and faithful recreation of historical trumpet works and information (and his performance of the Hummel and Leopold Mozart concertos are among my favorite on this album). The orchestras/conductors behind the soloists are of equally high quality and help make this a great bargain CD for students or young players looking for a good resource or reference recording.
(In addition to Bernard Soustrot, Maurice André also plays on the Vivaldi Concerto for 2 trumpets.)
