LaFave may be one of the best kept secrets in the "Americana" music genre,
By
This review is from: Favorites 1992-2001 (Audio CD)
I've seen LaFave perform a few times at the annual International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis but had never heard his CDs until this one arrived. Though the 16 tracks (a jam-packed 72 minutes!) were originally recorded for the Bohemia Beat label, this compilation is on LaFave's own Music Road Records. Ironically, though he owns the Music Road label, this is his only album on Music Road.Even though some of the recordings were made almost 20 years ago, they're just as relevant today. In 1992 there was no such "pigeon hole" music format, as "Americana" and so these songs were only known by folks who discovered the Austin, Tx music scene by referral from friends. I really like LaFave's vocals and if you've found your way to this review, you've probably heard him by now. If not, check out some samples and discover his early years. Also check out the other releases on the label featuring other fine (and pretty much undiscovered-by-the masses) singers LaFave is giving exposure to, like Sam Baker and Kevin Welch. This album of Jimmy's favorites is wonderful...highlights the depth of soul he gives in all of his songs. God Bless Jimmy LaFave...I hope all who discover this amazing artist realize they are listening to one of the most amazing musical talents they'll ever experience.
