Book Description

April 1, 2009
A lesser-known trait of Malaysia's beloved first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj is his passion for food. Bapa Malaysia (Father of Malaysia), as he has been fondly known by generations of Malaysians, loved to take charge of the kitchen and enjoyed cooking as much as eating. In this book, his niece, Y. T. M. Dato' Tunku Mukminah Tunku Mohd. Jiwa warmly invites us into his kitchen. Recipes of strong asian and western flavours are featured in their vibrant colour and easy-to-follow steps.

Tempting the palate, a collection of over 70 recipes from succulent seafood, tasty meat dishes and mouth-watering desserts are presented in good, wholesome simplicity. As expected, Tunku's ever famous roast beef with Yorkshire pudding is also included. For convenience, the wide range but easily available ingredients are supported by a comprehensive glossary.

Heart-warming anecdotes on Tunku, by those who were closest to him, are a special touch to the book. As we savour Tunku's recipes we will remember the charms and warmth of his presence in that era.

About the Author

Born to Kedah royalty in 1933, Y.T.M. Dato' Mukminah Tunku Mohd. Jiwa has a deep passion for food and cooking. Her early education was interrupted by the break out of the Second World War and soon after Tunku Mukminah involved herself in welfare work and the development of women. In 1958, Tunku Abdul Rahman recommended that she work with the Women's Institute and was sent on a training stint to the United Kingdom and there, she had the opportunity to give cooking lessons on Malay cuisine.

She cooked for Tunku on many occasions, culminating a collection of his favourite home recipes, some of which are Thai influenced. She remembers him fondly and hopes to share Tunku's delight of his recipes with everyone, working together with the team of Federal Hotels International and The Federal Kuala Lumpur.
