Perhaps more of an advocate for contemporary music than any other major pianist essentially rooted in traditional repertory, Maurizio Pollini was born in Milan, Italy. He learned quickly and was given piano lessons from Carlo Lonati from an early age, making his public debut at the age of nine. Enrolling in the Milan Conservatory, he studied with Carlo Vidusso. In 1957 he performed a recital ... Read more in Amazon's Maurizio Pollini Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Pollini's Beethoven January 23, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This 2-CD set is a compilation of Beethoven's most popular sonatas. I call the reader's attention especially to Pollini's breathtaking reading of the "Appassionata." The sound quality is excellent. It is highly recommended if you are searching a first contact with this repertoire (Beethoven collectors usually have the original albums).

A lot of music lovers feel themselves obliged to place reviews in the Amazon sites promoting their favorites. Paraphrasing a remark by Pierre Boulez, they usually mean that "my Beethoven is better, more authentic, truer, more profound, more modern, more justified, more bla-bla-bla etc, than yours," then they list a lot of recordings from their collection as proof of their authority, and they usually conclude by raising their favorites to paradise and by throwing some reviewed CD in mediocrity's swamp. I am writing to recommend Maurizio Pollini's recordings but I am not going to make comparisons. Pollini's playing is brilliant, his touch sounds always precise with beautiful nuances from pianissimo to fortissimo, every note is essential as well as every pause, he usually plays every piece in concerts many times over many years before recording, and that is why I have chosen his recordings as "the" reference, at least regarding the sonatas that are available in the market (unfortunately there is no complete set of the Beethoven sonatas by Pollini). He has been criticized for approaching the scores "too literally," with tempos that are often "too fast," but I cannot see what can be wrong with brilliant playing according to the best sources.
