Review
'I love this book! A fantastically sharp, witty novel, full of hilarious observations and wincingly good one-liners. I followed Katie Castle's fall from fashion's summit, and her subsequent mad scramble back to the top, with delight.' Sophie Kinsella 'Stylish and witty. I loved it' Penny Vincenzi 'Sharply observed and very amusing first novel' Kirkus Reviews
Petty, sarcastic, self-obsessed and vain, Katie Castle has it all - the well-paid job in the glamorous world of high fashion, the beautiful and philosophical boyfriend, the hip London flat, and the invites to all the right parties with the right people. But it's not good enough for her - she wants one final stupid fling before settling down in the world of marriage. Of course, things go horribly wrong - her future mother-in-law, who is also her boss, finds out, sacks her, has another lock fitted on her flat and blacklists her from all possible work. Gorgeous intellectual boyfriend leaves for research in the Hebrides and Katie's left to sort it all out. Which of course, she does. Not the most attractive of narrators, Katie uses a jokey familiarity that distances rather than attracts - mentioning an important plot point is going to happen 'ooh, about a hundred pages from now' not only ruins any element of surprise but patronizes as well. Moreover, her attempts at poetic description confuse and irritate: how can eagles be 'playthings of great forces beyond their control and yet shrewd masters of their destiny'? The most enjoyable scene in this rambling novel is when Katie is caught by influential PR girls in a shocking pink shellsuit on a park bench with a can of special brew and a crew of drunks at her side. If only it ended there. (Kirkus UK)
