"FAVRE" is terrific!,
By Susan O. "Packfan" (Eagle River, WI, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
I've been a Packer fan for over 40 years and have purchased lots of Packer memorabilia over time, but this has to be about the best thing I ever bought, especially for the price! This is a wonderful book, written by Brett and his Mom, with Chris Havel (a sports writer in Green Bay) that deals with his humble beginnings, all the way up to that awesome Raiders game after his Dad died. From the forward by Terry Bradshaw, appropriately entitled "The Best", to the last chapter by Peter King from Sports Illustrated, entitled "Legend", it's a book that everyone from youngsters to old-timers will enjoy. I thought I'd seen just about all of Brett's pictures they'd ever printed, but this book has a ton of game and family photographs I'd never seen before...some are double-page photos, and the quality is excellent. The icing on the cake is the DVD that comes with the book: "In Their Own Words: Brett Favre" from NFL Films. It is really great...funny and inspiring...it makes you proud to have watched Brett from when he was the new kid on the team to, now, the seasoned veteran. If you love the Packers and Brett Favre, you HAVE to get this book...either for yourself or your favorite Packer fan for Christmas!

FAVRE-TASTIC!,
By A E W "Packer Fan" (Green Bay, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
What more can be written about Brett Favre at this stage in his career that hasn't been written about already? Well, how about reading and hearing about it in Brett's own words!
The new book "FAVRE" is co-authored by Favre and his mother, Bonita, with Chris Havel (Green Bay sports editor). But the real heart of the book is pure Brett. He covers his illustrious career from playing peewee football in fifth grade through that incredible, emotional Monday night in Oakland last December where he played one of his best games ever just 24 hours upon hearing of the death of his beloved father/coach/mentor. Bonita shares wonderful anecdotes from Brett's childhood and stories of their close-knit family life. We learn that Brett's tough competitiveness was a trait inherited from his dad, Big Irv. We also see the prankster Brett was as a child continues on in the man today. Deanna, Brett's wife and high school sweetheart, shows the softer side of Brett through their Foundation for disabled and disadvantaged children. She divulges that if Brett were not an NFL quarterback, she's certain he would be a great special education teacher like his mom. Being from Green Bay and a lifelong Packer fan, I was most touched by Brett's love of his team, his loyalty to the Packer organization, and his deep fondness and respect for the city of Green Bay and its diehard fans. He upholds the honor, tradition, and great history of one of the greatest sports franchises, and continues to add to the lore and legend of what is Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers. He appreciates what the Packers mean to us, just as we appreciate what he means to the team and to the sport of football. The book is filled with stunning full-color photographs that serve as a beautiful pictorial backdrop to the story. Most are the work of local photographer, Mark A. Wallenfang, who has been covering Brett and the Packers for the past eleven years. And if that isn't enough, accompanying the book is a 45-minute DVD of Brett "In his own words", that will make you laugh and cry. The complete package is a bargain at any price. This book is not only a must have for a Favre fan, but also for any football enthusiast with a true appreciation for the sport.

Salute to a genuine folk hero,
By Dr. Emil "Tom" Shuffhausen (Central Gulf Coast) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
Brett Favre is more than just a stellar quarterback in the NFL. He is a genuine folk hero, who embodies the grit, tenacity, hard-won skill, and overwhelming success of the American dream. This entertaining and often poignant look at Favre's life provides insights into what makes this football all-star tick, on and off the field. It also provides some great life keys for success in any endeavor. Hope, hard work, good humor, determination, and resiliancy are great skills to cultivate, and Brett Favre is the embodiment of all of it. Favre is humble but confident, and that tone comes through in his down-to-earth and inspiring story. He's not too proud to reveal his weaknesses, challenges, and stumbles; these issues, rather than diminishing Brett Favre only enhance the sense of appreciation and respect for what he has overcome. If for no other reason, buy this book for Favre's stories about his Dad, which are loving, humorous, and ultimately quite moving.

Fun book to read! Some chapters written by his family.,
By Hello Kitty Ellen (Appleton, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
This is different than your average sports book because some of the chapters are written by Brett's mom and wife and by Brett himself. Since his mom co-authored the book, she included adorable baby photos of Brett and family photos of his wife and kids. Brett's wife writes about the Favre family charity fund which helps disabled and less fortunate kids in both WI and MS. His mom writes about the Favre family obsession with football (Brett's dad is a coach) and how she spent her life going to EVERY one of Brett's games, missing only one when she couldn't get a flight. I think Wisconsin Packer fans will relate to the simple smalltown life in the bayous of Mississippi that the Favre family writes about.

The Ultimate Brett Favre Book!,
By
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
This book is awesome!
If you are a Brett Favre fan, this book is THE book that you will want to open when your Grand kids ask you about Brett Favre ,and what he was all about, as a football player, and as a person. With countless, beautiful, full color photos of Brett, and his family, this is a book that any Favre, or Packers fan wont want to be without. Some books lose their importance over time. This one should be put in a Green Bay Packers time capsule, and opened up a hundred years from now.....it will still be a relevant look at Brett Favre and the way that his football talent, and his love for the game changed the Packers organization forever! This book, by itself is awesome. Add to that, the fact that you also get an awesome Brett Favre DVD and this is as good as it gets when it comes to Brett Favre. Looking for that perfect gift for a Brett Favre fan? This is it. Better yet, if you visit the shop at Brett's official website, you can get a copy of this book (DVD included) personally Autographed by Brett and his Mom, Bonita. For the autographed book, visit www.officialbrettfavre.com Or, if that is just a little beyond your bank account's grasp, simply order the unsigned copy here, at amazon.com This is THE Brett Favre book! It is a "Favre-olous!" book that any fan of Brett or the Packers will treasure!

An American Original,
By Carlos Enrique Fox (North of Mexico, South of Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
Brett Favre, he's one of a kind. At the very least, you could say they don't make them like Favre anymore. This guy is a throwback. A tough, honest, aw-shucks-humble, determined, fighting, loyal, straight-shooting son-of-a-gun. He's Terry Bradshaw without all the ham. He's Snake Stabler, but a little more stable. He's Johnny Unitas, Bobby Layne, Slingin Sammy Baugh, Billy Kilmer, and, heck, Bronko Nagurski and Dick Butkus, too. Maybe he's got a touch of Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Jerry Clower, and Garrison Keillor in him, too, judging from the way he writes. This is a heckuva story. When you get through with this book, you'll wish you could have known Big Irv, Brett's Dad. There's a lot of guts and heart and blood and sweat and tears in this book, and some laughter, too. Most of all, this is just a dadgum great, genuine, real, heartfelt book. If you love football, get this book. If you love great stories, get this book. If you love your Daddy, get this book. I'm going to be giving a few of these away this year at Christmastime.

A Great Legend,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
"To be honest, after that play I thought, something special might happen be going on here." That's what Brett Favre the to-be hall of famer was thinking after he connected to Javon Walker on a twenty-three yard touchdown pass. I chose to read this memoir because I am very interested I sports as you can probably tell. Brett Favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks to walk this planet.
Brett Favre was drafted thirty-third choice overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1991 NFL draft. Brett had gone into a game as backup against a NFL powerhouse, the Philadelphia Eagles. He came back to win that game. Scouts from Green Bay noticed his talent and the Atlanta scouts did not. Green bay traded a first round draft choice to the Atlanta Falcons for Brett's contract rights. That trade was a start to a very talented franchise. When Don Majkowski the Green Bay Packers starting quarterback sprained his left ankle in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals head coach Mike Holmgren put Brett in the game. The Packers were behind 20-10 half way through the fourth quarter. The Green Bay receivers never gave up on Brett and the packers came back to win 24-23. "I Started running around the field looking for people to hug when came upon Ron Hallstrom, our three hundred pound guard, and we head butted. I split my forehead open. It was bleeding but I didn't care." From that point on, Brett Favre was the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. A couple years later Brett Favre had taken a mediocre NFL team, and with a few great free agent signings, he had turned them into a Super Bowl team. January 26, 1997. The Green Bay Packers were suiting up for Super Bowl XXXI. Many press people had doubted the chances of Brett taking his team to the super bowl that year due to the fact that he had been recovering from a shoulder injury the previous off-season. Brett Favre and his Packers played in Super Bowl XXXI against the New England Patriots and came out on top. The final score was Green Bay Packers 35, New England Patriots 21. Brett Favre had won his first ever super bowl in the Louisiana Superdome against the New England Patriots. "I got goose bumps when I looked up at the scoreboard and it read Packers 35, Patriots 21. We were Super Bowl XXXI Champions". Brett learned that he is a very good quarterback. He took his team to the Super Bowl, set records, is high in the record books, and like most Hall of Famers wasn't known in college. He went from a third string quarterback on a bad team to a second string quarterback on a below average team. He then went to first string very quickly. He learned how important his dad's presence and training was to him.

One Word Says It All,
By
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
This is a great book. Now, admittedly, I'm a major Brett Favre fan and, because of that, I will confess that I am biased. Biased or not, however, one cannot refute the fact that the book is an excellent representation of the man on and off the field. Add to it the accompanying DVD and you hear it in his own voice. And there are parts of it that are very funny.
This is a personal book and one gets the impression that it was done out of love for his father, as well as the game of football. In his own voice, you will hear Brett describe his successes and his failures and it is all based around an event--the death of Brett's father and Green Bay's subsequent game against Oakland--that shows his determination, courage, and ability. Buy it; read it; and you won't be disappointed with it.

The Legend Grows,
By Dion Rowsell (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Favre (Hardcover)
Few athletes today truly exemplify the competitive professional. Whether you are a Brett Favre fan or not, no one can argue the heart, discipline, enthusiasim, leadership, longevity, and competitive spirit of the Green and Gold's #4. Brett Favre is an NFL legend that true football fans will be telling their grandchildren about with amazing stories of last minute drives and forty yard bombs into the endzone. A large part of Brett Favre's appeal has always been his accessibility to his fans, and this book is another example of Favre allowing his fans to get to know the legend on a personal level. Sure, a great portion of this book is devoted to Favre's football success, but the reader can understand the foundation that formed the man..his relationship with his family, and the strong sense discipline and values instilled from childhood.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any sports fan. Few athlete's reach the status of 'legend' while still playing; Brett Favre leads this elite category. |
