5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album, one of her best, February 27, 2002
By
"dekaliber" (Cornell University) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Faye Wong (Audio CD)
It's been only about a month ago that I was introduced to Faye Wong by one of my friends, even then, with a great deal of skepticism, for although I am Chinese myself, my musical tastes have hardly ever been that way. At first I thought she was nothing spectacular - compared to my favorite bands Alice and Chains and Pantera, this was of course pretty *effeminate* music :P. I'll admit I really liked the song "Centuries of Loneliness" (Lovers & Strangers) that my friend had me listen to, but that was about it. However, Faye is a voice that grows upon you. I became more impressed with her songs the more I listened to them, and finally took the opportunity to listen to this album. While on the slighter mellower side (there aren't any really "rock" songs), it remains one of my favorites. It's an *amazing* album start to finish, and I have a lot of favorites on it, such as "Men" (track 3), "Ren Jian" (track 5), "Pu Huo" (track 9), and "Yun Duan" (track 10). However, by no means does this imply that the other songs aren't any less worth listening to, because they're all great. It's a nice album to listen to as you're drifting off to sleep or studying (hmm that sounds pretty related). Her voice is beautiful, the music is sublime. I'd recommend this as a first purchase if you're looking to see what Faye's all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars The rise of westernized canto-pop, July 20, 2004
By
Javier (North Vancouver, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Faye Wong (Audio CD)
Faye Wong is one of the few Hong Kong artists who trascends international borders. Unlike her peers, who have a more local target audience and have stayed that way, Faye Wong applies her western education (England, Music), her western influences (Cranberries) and her songmaking abilities to evolve and grow beyond the eastern canto-pop world.
Unlike western divas like Christina Aguilera or Celine Dion, who use their vocal chords to sing over-the-top, shamelessly commercial tunes, Faye Wong treats her audience with a heart-warming collection of intelligent, well-crafted songs.
Before she skyrocketed to international fame with the song "Eyes on me" for the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack, this self-titled album became a major landmark in her career.

4.0 out of 5 stars Faye Wong's voice and music will grow on you, January 31, 2006
This review is from: Faye Wong (Audio CD)
I did not particularly like 王菲's music at the beginning.
Oddly enough, as I listen to the album several times more,
her voice and music grow on me.
My all-time favorite tracks on this album are:
2. 你快樂 (所以我快樂) - You're Happy, So I'm Happy
5. 人間 - Mortal World -- one of Faye Wong's signature songs
6. 我也不想這樣 - I Don't Want To Be Like This Either

If you like her music here, check out her many greatest-hit albums,
such as "The 1st Complete Collection from Faye Wong"
sold at yesasia.com, not provided at amazon.com.
Faye Wong's music is so extraordinarily varied,
and you will certainly find something you love, and become addicted.
