From Booklist

This well-designed picture book succeeds on two important levels: engaging the reader through the beauty of its pages and imparting knowledge, albeit cursory, about its subject. It is about Brazil's sugar and coffee plantations and the cattle ranches in the South. The name of a rural plantation or property in Brazil is usually preceded by the term fazenda, the ranches are called estancias. Pires provides a solid introductory essay that traces the development of these plantations and ranches. Although he discusses colonization by the Portuguese, the impact of various other European countries' adventures on the country, and the importation of slaves, his emphasis is on life in the casa-grande, or "great house." At this point, photographer Nicolas Sapieha takes center stage, though Pires' presence hovers via his fine captions. The areas represented are Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Bahia, and Rio Grande do Sul. The fazendas themselves are well preserved, with new furnishings thoughtfully added, and the land is well kept. The past wealth of a few and the labor of many are evoked through these graceful pictures. Bonnie Smothers

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiration for the plantation style decoration, May 31, 1999

This review is from: Fazendas: The Great Houses and Plantations of Brazil (Hardcover)
A very beautiful collection of the best traditional "fazendas" depicting the wealthy lifestyles of that period. A great resource for portuguese colonial furniture with Brazilian hardwoods - a great combination !

4.0 out of 5 stars PLANTATIONS OF BRAZIL, October 23, 2006
This review is from: Fazendas: The Great Houses and Plantations of Brazil (Hardcover)
Well conceived book on a very interesting subject, that frankly i knew nothing about. The images of these beautiful buildings are crisp and sharp. The text is highly informative and the book is easy to navigate. These "Fazenda's" are really quite spectacular and many of the settings are just breathtaking. Highly recommended, after taking in this book, i feel quite enlightened.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "great houses" of Brazil, March 2, 2011

This review is from: Fazendas: The Great Houses and Plantations of Brazil (Hardcover)
This lovely book features the fazendas, or great houses, of Brazil's coffee plantations, sugar plantations, and cattle ranches. The introduction provides a history of colonial Brazil through the lens of these industries. The rest of the book is devoted to the fazendas themselves, with 6-10 pages per property. For each one, the author provides a history of the ranch or plantation, its owners and its buildings, along with beautiful color photographs, many of them full-page.

Although the author draws from historical sources to describe how the buildings and interiors looked in the past, the photographs are all contemporary. This is a beautiful overview of the traditional architecture, interior design and furnishings of Brazil's great houses. Recommended for architecture and design libraries as well as anyone who wants to know a little more about colonial Brazil and enjoy an armchair tour of the Brazilian countryside.
