Nice Troughton-style adventure, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Fear of the Daleks (Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles, 1.2 ) (Audio CD)
I picked up the second instalment of the Companion Chronicles with a hint of scepticism. After all, the Time Lords had erased Zoe Herriot's memories of her travels with the Doctor. Author Patrick Chapman neatly sidesteps that little difficulty by couching the tale as a dream. He also does a great job of capturing the style of the late Troughton era, complete with witty repartee and the occasional cry of "Oh my giddy aunt".
Set directly after Zoe's first adventure with the Doctor, Fear of the Daleks finds the TARDIS crew landing on an asteroid that is hosting peace talks between two warring races. Naturally it isn't long before the Doctor and his companions are in the clutches of a mad scientist bent on galactic domination and in league with the Daleks. Using a mind projector powered by a Dalek crystal, the scientist attempts to use Zoe to assassinate his political rival, thereby derailing the peace talks.
I really enjoyed this story. Wendy Padbury did a nice job of bringing the text to life, even mimicking the Second Doctor's speech patterns. Of course it is always fun to have the Daleks being their nasty little selves. As always Nicholas Briggs is superb in his role as the voice of Daleks.

The 1st 2nd Doctor Audio, March 3, 2009
This review is from: Fear of the Daleks (Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles, 1.2 ) (Audio CD)
Fear of the Daleks is the second of the Big Finish Companion Chronicles and the first featuring a 2nd doctor adventure.
Wendy Padbury reprises her role of Zoe talking to her analyst about the strange dreams she is having of traveling with the Doctor when she only met him once. She then tells the tale of encountering the Daleks and their attempt to stop an alliance that might rise against them.
Nick Briggs of the TV series plays the Daleks much to the delight of my son who doesn't like the older version of the voices. Padbury hasn't lost a beat and wisely doesn't try to play the other voices as anything other than her telling the story.
I didn't care for the ending the "voice of the doctor" business, but combined with the 2nd series story
Helicon Prime (Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles) it give an excellent setup to perhaps a 4th series story with the pair.
It is certainly worth your time and your money
