Well paced, cleverly plotted, and chock-full of cozy glimpses of life in a small English village, Purser's latest has Lois partnering again with local detective (and secret admirer) Hunter Cowgill. When Howard Jenkinson, the mayor of nearby Tresham, is found floating facedown in his backyard fishpond, his death appears to be a tragic accident. But things don't quite add up, and Detective Cowgill persuades Lois to do her usual discreet snooping. Despite the disapproval of her family, Lois uses her cadre of dedicated cleaners to help piece together bits of village gossip, odds and ends of past history, and snippets of information that eventually crack the case wide open. Even the usually unflappable Lois is shocked to learn that the civilized veneer of her peaceful village conceals a shocking tale of wife swapping, betrayal, and revenge. Lois Meade is a heroine to be taken with pinches of salt. Her home-grown detecting skills and sharp tongue meld nicely with her managerial skills. Not a lady to be ignored, as Hunter would tell us. I always look forward to more Lois.

Ann Purser is one of my favorite authors. Her story lines are always ver interesting, and the characters are always evolving. This book holds your interest and you wish it would go on and on.
