4.0 out of 5 stars Come Back to get some Toxic Voodoo
"Toxic Voodoo" has been unjustly criticized and merits more attention from the metal public. Granted, it's more of a Dawn Crosby solo project than a real Fear of God album and it came on the heels of the brilliant "Within The Veil" that would be nearly impossible to match. But, "Toxic Voodoo" is an interesting mélange of death, thrash and doom metal with Dawn's...

3.0 out of 5 stars Heavy, but..........
In comparison to Fear Of God's earlier release, Within The Veil, I found Toxic Voodoo to be just an average release. It is a very heavy release musically, but something seems to be missing. This may possibly be because other than vocalist Dawn Crosby, this is an entirely differnt band. I don't feel they have the same chemistry the original band member's had.The other...

In comparison to Fear Of God's earlier release, Within The Veil, I found Toxic Voodoo to be just an average release. It is a very heavy release musically, but something seems to be missing. This may possibly be because other than vocalist Dawn Crosby, this is an entirely differnt band. I don't feel they have the same chemistry the original band member's had.The other problem I found was in Dawn's vocals. Althogh she had some verey raspy vocals on their first release, she also had some very clear parts to the cd. The way everything was arranged between the two different vocal styles resulted in a tremendous sound for the finishe product. On this release the clearer sounding vocals are very, very few to say the least, while the harsher sound is far more prelavent. Without the mix It just dose'nt work as well. This one may work for those who enjoy the sound of todays raspy sounding bands, but for me It was a huge let down from the earlier material.

But, "Toxic Voodoo" is an interesting mélange of death, thrash and doom metal with Dawn's unique tortured vocals and stays interesting throughout it's duration. There is groove aplenty and heaviness that could challenge the likes of Slayer and Testament.

R.I.P. Dawn Crosby!!! I really liked the first CD from them, but this one isn't bad. I just preferred the debut CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Banshee-Fronted Obituary-esque Greatness, December 3, 2008
This review is from: Toxic Voodoo (Audio CD)
Toxic Voodoo sounds like a brilliant mix of the late Dawn Crosby's enchanting and ethereal banshee-like vocals with a sound reminiscent of old Obituary. I recommend this release to anyone looking for an alternative to the cookie-cutter vocals of the female death metal niche. (Yeah you, At The Gates.) This album is an underrated classic.
