Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Light brings back intrepid reporter Karen Glick, feature writer for Profit magazine, for a second outing (following Too Rich to Die) with largely satisfying results. The three Reiner sisters, Linda, Ginny and Flo, have created a computer program called Goldring that accurately predicts the stock market, and have used it to make themselves incredibly wealthy. But the digital goose that lays the golden eggs proves deadly: when Flo is murdered and the only copy of Goldring is stolen, Glick works alongside oldest sister Linda to track down the murderer and the missing program. It isn't long before their own lives are in danger, as they're pursued by several powerful and nefarious factions. Light is skillful setting the multiple and complicated plots spinning, and despite the body count he manages to keep the tone light and quick; however, the story—nicely tied up though it is—relies heavily on coincidence and overly talky characters, and much of the supporting cast feel stock. That said, Glick remains a strong, witty heroine; her latest adventure should please fans of Wall Street thrillers. (Nov.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware the "reviews", April 13, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fear & Greed (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book on the basis of the FORBES magazine review this last week. (The author is affiliated with FORBES). I've just read the first 75 pages and, frankly, think it is pretty awful so far. So I came online here to see if any of the reader reviews would match the book blurbs from FORBES people and, coincidentally I'm sure, other authors who had also been favorably reviewed by FORBES. I notice the reviews here so far--and the reader reviews for Light's other book on this site--are largely from people who have made this the ONLY BOOK THEY HAVE EVER REVIEWED. Seems like hype to me. I'll give the book another 50 pages--if it doesn't get better, it goes in the trash. [Update: It went into the trash]

5.0 out of 5 stars Characters, Plot Twists and, of course, Dead Bodies, March 15, 2007

Lawrence Light's second Karen Glick thriller is a stunning sequel, introducing us to a richly textured web of plot twists and characters like Jack Faff, a vertically challenged Donald Trump, and Kingman Wooten, a 300 pound, cheese eating, cuckolded national security director. Set against the backdrop of Wall Street and a major national financial magazine, Fear & Greed rushes readers through a wonderfully funny tale of naked ambition and ludicrous ego leading up to a most improbable ending. I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong Sequel!, December 5, 2006

This review is from: Fear & Greed (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed Too Rich to Live, Mr. Light's first Karen Glick mystery, but Fear and Greed has made me a true fan. Much as the Karen Glick character continues to develop her investigative skills, the writer has developed an even more intricate, subtle, and suspenseful plot full of surprise twists. It's as enjoyayable and entertaining a thriller as one could ask for - I'm looking forward to number 3!
