About the Author

Matt Fraction started creating comics with the smaller publishers, like AiT/Planet Lar and IDW Publishing. He is also known for his work on The Five Fists of Science and Casanova, as well as a number of series for Marvel Comics. Fraction is currently working on Marvel's Uncanny X-Men, Thor and Invincible Iron Man, the latter of which led to his consulting work on the set of the film Iron Man 2.

More About the Author

Before joining Marvel Comics, writer Matt Fraction had already established his reputation as an emerging new talent with his work on Last of the Independents. Fraction's tale of a bank robbery gone wrong earned him a coveted "A" grade from Entertainment Weekly, as well as interest from Marvel. After taking on a short story assignment in the anthology title X-Men Unlimited, Fraction was handpicked to launch two of Marvel's biggest projects for 2006: Punisher War Journal with artist Ariel Olivetti, and Immortal Iron Fist, with co-writer Ed Brubaker and artist David Aja. Both series met with overwhelming critical and fan acclaim, selling out their respective first issues within days of release. This led to two even bigger projects: The launching of Invincible Iron Man, a high-profile first issue premiering the same month as the blockbuster film; and Uncanny X-Men, written in tandem with Immortal Iron Fist partner Brubaker. In addition to his Marvel work, Fraction writes Casanova, an off-beat series illustrated by Gabriel Bá which recently moved to Marvel's Icon imprint. He is also a talented filmmaker and graphic designer, heading up the MK12 firm with a worldwide client base that includes Adidas, MTV and Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Fraction remains one of Marvel's most popular writers; other credits include The Order and Thor: Ages of Thunder.

1.0 out of 5 stars A COLD DRY MESS January 12, 2012
By Dr. M
Format:Hardcover
Absolutely one of the worst Hardcover collections I have ever read from Marvel or DC.

Starts strong enough with the first chapter. However, as the book progresses, each chapter becomes less and less coherent. The last two chapters read as if entire pages have been left out. It's a cold dry mess.

Not at all on par with "Secret Invasion" or "Civil War."

Characters act and speak out of character and without any motivation, the dialogue is stilted, there are colossal plot holes.
(can they even be "plot holes" if there is no plot to speak of?) -- if you are a fan of Thor, Iron Man or Captain America save your money.

I suspect that there may have been story points played out in other Marvel titles, however, if that was the fact, this collection should have at least made an attempt to reference those fact. (Honestly, I do not know for sure if they *do* happen else where, I'm making an assumption as Matt Fraction and Stuart Immonen generate work I typically enjoy).

In short, I feel robbed. A $40.00 list price should insure some level of story closure. Or competence. Sadly, it gives neither.

Stuart Immonen does some nice work in these pages, but it's just not enough to warrant the purchase.

In the "Fool me once" category, I have cancelled any orders for books that crossover with this Fear Itself event.

This is, for me, a jumping off point for Marvel's crossover events.
Possibly for Marvel books in general.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, but disappointing March 18, 2012
By sduke
Format:Hardcover
*SPOILERS*

Before I picked up the Fear Itself plot book, I'd already read and liked the Journey Into Mystery tie-in and was predisposed to enjoy this event. Unfortunately, although Fear Itself starts off strong, it becomes more and more convoluted and tiresome to read as it goes on. This isn't because nothing is happening-- in fact, it's because *too much* is happening too quickly. We're meant to understand the fear the populous is going through under the Serpent's hand, yet we barely see it. Important character deaths (however impermanent they probably are) are completely glossed over. It sometimes seems as though entire pages are missing that would have elaborated on character motivations and plot developments. Additionally, there are numerous out-of-character moments that occur sporadically throughout (afflicting most of the main cast), leading to an uneven tone for the book overall. The art was mostly enjoyable, though there were several less-than-stellar panels (especially during certain emotional moments, where the Immonen tends to draw people spitting in a very silly way). Still, the first chapters were highly enjoyable, and there were enough good moments scattered throughout the rest to make it tolerable. I'd say this book is worth reading if only to allow one to read the best tie-ins better and to enjoy the build-up.

1.0 out of 5 stars Skip It! February 5, 2012
By Ian
Format:Hardcover
I was extremely disappointed by this miniseries. As a long-time Marvel fan, I have suffered from "event fatigue." I honestly prefer when Marvel does self-contained stories in their individual series, but I had high hopes for Fear Itself. Matt Fraction is a great writer who has been doing stellar work on Iron Man and Thor. Unfortunately, he drops the ball here. I'll admit that it's cool seeing the Hulk and the Thing turned into mindless villains, but the whole story surrounding it just stinks. We never get a real sense of fear and dread that is supposed to surround the villain of the story. The first six chapters build up to an anticlimactic battle in the final chapter that is basically forgettable. I hate to be so negative and bash this story so bad, but I honestly couldn't wait for it to be over. It just seemed like everyone was phoning it in. Even the two major deaths in this title are undone in the follow-up "Shattered Heroes." If you must read this, I recommend borrowing it from somebody. Don't waste your hard-earned dollars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great artwork, story line was iffy.
I enjoyed the book but the story line was eh. It was kind of similar to DC's Blackest Night story line. Would still recommend this to keep with continuity.

Is this going to be oversized?
No, according to Marvel's own solicitation listing, the only hardcover collection announced yet for FEAR ITSELF will be a standard trim size, like the so-called "premiere" hardcovers from Marvel (oddly enough, the 7.1 issues that served as epilogue to it are being collected into... Read more
