This review is from: Fear and the Muse: The Story of Anna Akhmatova [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is an extremely well-produced film about one of the great 20th Century poets. Not only is Akhmatova's significance as a poet explored (and Claire Bloom provides an eloquent voice for the poetry throughout), but also her role in Russia's history from the glory days before WWI, through the horrifying purges of Stalin. Anyone who is hazy as to what happened to human lives -- and the arts -- during this period should watch this film. It's often painful, but ultimately stands as a testament to the ability of some individuals to survive, and even triumph, over adversity. Akhmatova lived an epic life, and her poetry will last because it transcends politics, and celebrates the enduring beauty of the human spirit.
