5.0 out of 5 stars Doro delivers another strong album!, February 10, 2009
By
B.A. Williams (Las Vegas, NV USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fear No Evil (MP3 Download)
'Fear No Evil' offers up a great batch of new songs from the Metal Queen... Doro Pesch. Song for song, this album rocks a bit more than the last few.

There are four power ballads on this release: 'Herzblut', 'Walking with Angels'(feat. ex-Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen), 'It Kills Me', and '25 Years'. Nothing boring or snoozy here.

The other seven songs on the mp3 album just rock - no other way to put it. Standout tracks for me are 'On The Run', 'I Lay My Head Upon My Sword', 'The Night Of The Warlock', and 'Caught In a Battle'. The first single 'Celebrate' is catchy (with a side of cheese).

'Fear No Evil' is one of Doro's best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fear Not! Doro's Here!, March 23, 2009
This review is from: Fear No Evil (Dig) (Audio CD)
"Fear No Evil" has become my favorite album from Doro under that name of "Doro." I mean I've liked her albums like "Fight" and "Warrior Soul" along with the early 90s, but she's got more "hard rock" songs among those albums with some songs touching the heavy metal she played with Warlock back in the 80s. However "Fear No Evil" is definitely a heavier album and more metal sounding than her previous outputs, several songs remind me of those 80s metal anthems she played with Warlock. There are even more guitar solos present here for you guitarheads!

The first two songs "Night of the Warlock" and "Running from the Devil" are slow songs but heavy, ballsy and catchy. "Night of the Warlock" is definitely a favorite on this album. "Celebrate" is a kind of cheesy song about the love of rock and metal, but I love it. "Caught in a Battle" was a surprise, it's probably the heaviest song I've ever heard Doro sing on, with defined double-bass drumming and high speed and fast guitar riffs. A little on the short side, but a fun headbanging listen. "On The Run" is a nice rocker with a catchy chorus - I find this to be an awesome driving song! Probably my favorite track on the whole album. "I Lay My Head Upon My Sword" is a fairly catchy midtempo song, a bit softer than the previous but a good listen. The ballads "Herzblut," "It Kills Me," "Long Lost For Love," and "Walking With The Angels" remind me again of why Doro Pesch is my favorite vocalist of all time - her rocking singing voice is sexy; gritty, powerful despite aged, but her ballad voice is so soothing, emotional and has this power that gives me chills up and down my spine. "Herzblut" is a very beautiful listen despite being in German, it reminds me of "Fur Immer" as far as feel goes and atmosphere. Buuuut the album's highlight has to be the duet with former Nightwish frontlady Tarja Turunen on "Walking with the Angels" - very interesting combo but their vocals surprisingly work and fit beautifully together! My favorite metal ladies on the same track...and I will use it again: gives me chills up and down my spine.

Overall, I think this is Doro's more metal album, has a lot of hard rockers, ballads, catchy lyrics and more guitar riffs and of course Doro's magnificent performance that reminds us of why she's the metal queen!

*I recommend you find the limited edition: it includes two bonus tracks, "Wildfire" which is a speed metal-hard rocker track and "You Won My Love" which is a more commercial sounding love song but still nice nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars And here I did not think it could get any better., February 20, 2009
This review is from: Fear No Evil (Dig) (Audio CD)
I have been a fan since the early days of Warlock. When I look back it's hard to believe it has been 20+ years. Doro still sounds as good as the first Warlock album "Burning the Witches". I enjoy listening to every song on this CD as of right now Herzbult is my favorite song. I hope to see her again in concert soon. She has always been a stand out amongst all of the other groups that have come and gone over the years. She believes in what she does and that makes a big difference in the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your Love Will Kill Me ..., May 5, 2010

I don't even know where to begin with this review. First, I have to say that I am so impressed with this album. Any female metal fan should own this album!!

I've always loved artists like Lita Ford and Doro Pesch and I just have to mention that this album is how Lita Ford's latest album, Wicked Wonderland should be like. No offense to anyone who likes the new Lita album and I'm certainly not going to talk about that too much here but I just had to mention it since I'm a tad disappointed with Lita's newest album but I do still like it of course.

The first thing I have to mention about this Fear No Evil album is this has a duet featuring the Finnish symphonic metal singer Tarja Turunen (Nightwish) on "Walking With The Angels." This is such an amazing ballad which is a duet and it's my second favorite track on this album.

My #1 favorite track on here is "It Kills Me." I just totally love this song and it's another ballad and I love how you hear thunder in the very beginning and the guitar parts are so awesome! I really love how the song fades out too at the end with the guitar playing. This song reminds me so much of that song "Your Love Will Kill Me" from Notre Dame. But just lyrically. This is just a total masterpiece!!

"On the Run" is a rocker which is really awesome as well!

This whole album is amazing and if you never heard Doro before or you have or you love Lita Ford or Nightwish, etc., or no matter what, please, please get this album!! It's female metal at it's best!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sailing the seas of cheese! In the best possible way of course..., March 4, 2010
This review is from: Fear No Evil (Audio CD)
Reviewing an album such as this is a fairly pointless activity. I mean the kind of people who are going to buy it (ummm... that would be me by the way) aren't going to give a tinkers cuss what anyone writes as their ability to ingest mountains of cheese renders them immune from any criticism of the product at hand.

You want cheese? How about the dodgy European style spoken word intro? I mean it's right outta 1985. And it then segues into a hard rockin track called The Night of the Warlock which actually kicks a fair amount of buttock.

You want cheese? How about track number 3 Celebrate? Girl power strikes a blow for righteousness here as a bunch of femme metal felines join our heroine to pledge their allegiance to metal. And guess what? Such is her street cred amongst the metal ladies just have a look at this guest appearance list for the track:- Floor Jansen, Angela Gossow, Ji-In Cho, Liv Kristine, Sabina Classen, Veronica Freeman, Liv and Girlschool. Blimey, it's a wonder poor old Biff Byford - who is also on the track - survived to tell the tale.

You want cheese? Try sampling track 7 - Walking With the Angels where our heroine duets with none other than Tarja Turunen. And it works a treat.

You want cheese? Have a look at the front cover. Nary an alteration in the way she has been marketed since around 1984 Burning the Witches. And despite a few wobbles of faith during the mid 90's (Machine II Machine electric club mix anyone?) it has to be said that the relevance of Ms Pesch is mainly due to the fact she hasn't really changed much. Rather, she kept to the same limited though sustaining furrow until the rule that says that `everything comes back into fashion eventually' started to work in her favour. And you know what - she is right and it's a pity more performers don't follow such an example.

The whole product is so well thought out in terms of giving the public what they want right down to the production (modern but not so sanitised it smells like a hospital), the cover and booklet art, lyrics to the whole shebang plus an enhanced section with wallpapers etc and an overriding sense of mission that is totally Teutonic. I mean if this thing was any more German it would come with a model kit for a Tiger tank. Of which I seem to recall building a few in my youth.... and I had this really cool 1/35 scale Panther tank.... oops I think I just shared a bit too much information!

You get the point. If you like Germanic metal or Warlock or Doro then you really don't need to think about buying this album. Just do so. It is a better album than Call of the Wild without a doubt and you really should support such `defenders of the faith' as Metal Hammer magazine might say.
