Product Description

On "Fear Of A Unique Identity", Antimatter's first record for more than four years, Mick Moss seems to follow the only logical path with respect to his recent work. After the critically acclaimed retrospective "Alternative Matter", he harks back to the electronic sounds from the early days - "Saviour" (2000) as well as "Lights Out" (2003) - without swerving from the Rock-oriented way established with "Leaving Eden" (2007). Songs like "Paranova", "Monochrome" or the video track "Uniformed & Black" once more demonstrate Moss' strong songwriting abilities.

Band mastermind Mick Moss puts in an astonishingly emotive, yearning, and devastating vocal delivery that is always beautifully melodic, even understated at times...There are deep connections between Antimatter and fellow melancholics ANATHEMA, but perhaps the clearest comparison to their sound is KATATONIA. However, where Katatonia create a more structured, comforting exploration of longing and misery, with Fear of a Unique Identity, Antimatter have become even more nebulous and mercurial, abandoning reason for emotion.

It's not every day you catch me singing songs to myself. Most of the time if the music I'm listening to actually has vocals, I either can't make out what they're singing or I don't care. It's often cringe-worthy or all been said before and doesn't engage me in the way the music does. I'm a bit Bart Simpson listening to Mrs. Krabappel, if you like. Of course, I do enjoy a good voice and vocal line, but I listen to tone, texture, timbre, technique, and melody rather than words. Outside of a dozen bands and songs they made me learn at school, I can't really sing any songs from start to finish. I can, however, now add Antimatter, the project of Mick Moss, to that with all good music, it's the emotion behind this record that makes it so enjoyable and worthy of praise. I love a miserable record. One that spends its time patiently mounting a case for the futility of human existence. There is simply no other emotion in music that makes me feel this alive no music more beautiful. I'm not a miserable person; I just love miserable music...With a strong and clear voice, Moss flows from metaphor to the literal as he paints a story of those who hide in the shadows of sameness and those who control what that sameness is. Great lyrics, sung deep and strong, with dynamic, powerful, and emotional music that together tell a story of terrible sadness. And I know the words (9/10 rating) --Ghost Cult

A very well-put-together release...highly recommended for those who want Anathema to put out dark records again (10/10 rating) --The Grim Tower webzine

Never want to give Antimatter a 4 really. Love all the prior stuff with and without Patterson. 'Leaving Eden' was a super transitional album for Mick Moss. Delivered on all fronts with much of the dark tech style left aside. Was a great, raw rock record with exhausting ups and downs. Moss is a great songwriter with a hauntingly smooth voice that works well with just a Guitar and now it is becoming a great force in a straight forward sense.

This CD is a combination of everything that is and was Antimatter within its 9 tracks.
Breakdown: (This is only for the standard version which I purchased weeks ago)

'Paranova' - Strong opening track. Nice modern rock with a very catchy Chorus and that excellent Moss Vocal delivery. It gets the disc started very well and is pretty accessible to be honest. But its a very good track, only issue I have is the last 2 minutes do drag with the repetition. Could have used a 2 minute shaving for best impact, but it is one of the best tracks overall. A great vision of how Antmatter is in a more direct/commercial aspect.

Some of the haunting electronica of old is back and track 2 - 'Monochrome'- really works because of it. Excellent track that uses the dark synth/piano vibe with excellent female Vocal by Vic Anselmo for a mesmerizing return of old for Antimatter. Can almost feel Patterson's presence on this track. Excellent!

The title track is a grower and is old school Antimatter. Very nice and again, strongly enhanced by Vic Anselmo's Voice. I do love her Voice. At first I found the Chorus (if you want to call it that) odd, but it sticks after a few listens.

'Firewalking' is good but at over 8 minutes, it could have a few more 'twists'. Decent just not one of the stronger tracks.
