5.0 out of 5 stars It's a hit of gritty magic that keeps you reading hard.
What I love about this book is the uncompromising nature of the main character, Jaguar Addams, who refuses to be less complex than she is. She's good, and she's not. She's in control of her life, and doesn't pretend not to be. Her morality is her own.

And her motto: See who you are. Be what you see.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, exciting but dark
First novel by this author, The Fear Principle is a good science fiction story with some horror elements. Features some fresh ideas about criminal justice, social controls, and telepathy. Comparable to recent work by N. Lee Wood, or early books by Joan Vinge. Sure, it's a first novel and a little rough in spots, but the author shows some real potential.

This review is from: Fear Principle (Paperback)
What I love about this book is the uncompromising nature of the main character, Jaguar Addams, who refuses to be less complex than she is. She's good, and she's not. She's in control of her life, and doesn't pretend not to be. Her morality is her own.

And her motto: See who you are. Be what you see.

In a futuristic prison system, Jaguar Addams works telepathically with criminals to make them face their fears. In this novel, she's assigned to Clare Rilasco, a hitwoman who took out a governor. When Jaguar and her cohort Alex Dzarny try to find out why she made the hit, the plot quickly thickens into a soup made of some of our worst nightmares. Jaguar's past, which includes surviving The Killing Times, becomes a part of the present fear of her own, which she must face and solve.

As the author takes us through a world made of sharp edges, the reader is compelled to find out what will happen next, and might make the mistake of not pausing to savor some of the poetic use of language used to create a sense of the difference between "normal" space and "telepathic" space. I was distinctly impressed by the way this was accomplished, and found the language and ideas of the book as worthwhile as the fast-paced plot.

I'm hoping the author has more in store for Jaguar. She's a character whose world I'd like to visit again.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fear Principle Review, April 15, 2008
This review is from: The Fear Principle (Paperback)
This is B.A. Chepaitis's first novel and it is ultimately a sci-fi genre novel, so those who do not like fiction, beware. In simple words, the novel is about an Earth orbiting prison called Planetoid Three, a way to end prison overcrowding on Earth. The novel revolves around the character Jaguar Addams, a teacher working on Planetoid three. Their responsibilities are to reach into the minds of the deadliest inmates telepathically and make them face their true and greatest fears. Jaguar, one of the top teachers is challenged by a dangerous assassin in her understanding of fear.

The story sets in the far and dark future. I got a sense that the world has been stripped of its good and criminals await in every corner. You can't help but feel like the whole novel took place at night; it has an eerie, creepy, Gotham City feel. This is something that helps the mystery of the story. Furthermore, I felt in certain parts of the novel that this might be a possible future for us, which is frightening!

Most of the characters in the novel seem to posses a dark secret, poor past or sinister plan that becomes visible in their attitudes toward other characters. These eventually hinder the compassion of the characters to become apparent. I believe this makes the relationships edgy, characters erratic, and progresses the plot.

Overall, I thought that I chose the first and right novel to read from many of B.A.'s novels. I deem this novel wonderful if you want to get a taste of B.A.'s talents. In addition, I was glad I had the opportunity to meet her in person.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book to read if you don't wanna read for your other classes, April 24, 2008

This review is from: The Fear Principle (Paperback)
The Fear Principle is a pretty good book to read if you are just tired of reading all the assignment given from your other classes. I recommened reading the novel and take your mind off that boring school related stuff. At first the novel seem a bit confusing but then later on it get to the exciting part and it uses language we can understand none of those Shakespeare's work where theres like a thousand meanings in one sentence. It straight on and forward. The reason this novel intrigues me because it more of our generation novel where the characters talk just like my friends and I sometimes so it keeps me interested throughout the novel I didn't fall asleep like when i read other novels I actually read the whole novel for a few hours straight without falling asleep like when i read any other books..The story is about this place Planetoid Three where apparently they send the most outcast criminals there hoping to reach their fears and confront the criminals fear making them into regular citizens of society.
However, there are some that fails and leave in a stray jacket into the crazy house. Our main Protaganist is a wild teacher Dr. Jaguar Addams who is in the Planetoid Three prison and she has her own way of getting to the criminals minds. However, she is about to face the most challenging subject of her career. The ultimate assassin. A dangerously disturbed woman who will teach Jaguar the true meaning of fear. Clare Rilasco remains the most feared and the most dangerous of all murderers. It is Jaguar's job to get inside her mind, learn what pushes her to kill. And who. The teacher is about to be the one who going to be teach by an criminal.
Finally, I'm telling you if you haven't read any real good book lately you should try this novel and you will enjoy it like I did. If you just want a change of reading habit try The Fear Principle and then maybe you will enjoy some of her other great works such as The Fear of God,Learning Fear, and A Lunatic Fear. It all part of a series of four novels continuing Dr. Jaguar Addams adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fear Principle, April 24, 2008
This review is from: The Fear Principle (Paperback)
The Fear Principle is the first in it's series. The main character, Jaguar Addams is very alluring and intriguing. In a futuristic world, having survived what was known as the Killing times, Jaguar Addams is working on Planetoid Three. The planetoids are a new system put in place for convicted criminals. With a new spin on telepathy, it shows a very new, very scary way of getting into peoples minds. This book captures you from the very first chapter and keeps you until the very last. Jaguar will always keep you wanting more.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book, December 4, 2000
By

This review is from: Fear Principle (Paperback)
_The Fear Principle_ is the first book about Dr. Jaguar Addams, an empath with a haunted past who "cures" criminals by uncovering the root of their fears. It takes place in a penal colony in the future, after an epidemic of serial murders called the Killing Times. In this book, Jaguar deals with a dangerous female assassin who has an unusual "gift" against empathy. Courageous, strong, and principled, Jaguar is on my list of favorite heroines.

B.C. Chepaitis has taken sci-fi to literary levels not seen since the work of Heinlein. As both friend and fellow writer I can merely recommend this book and suggest that readers have NOT heard the last of Jaguar Adams!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a fast read that holds up to a 2nd and 3rd read, March 31, 1998

This review is from: Fear Principle (Paperback)
The first time I read Fear Principle, I was compelled through the story by the twists of plot and action. The second time I read it, I relaxed, knowing I was in good hands. The third time I read it, I realized all the fear is about getting somewhere closer to - love? Being alive? It's subtle, and a compelling read.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Fear Principle, August 18, 2011
This is an interesting and engaging sci fi.

Dr. Jaguar Addams is a complex and intense person. She is a skilled empath who works on a prison planetoid. Her job is to confront the hardest of criminals and force them to face their deepest fear. The result is they deal with their issues and can be rehabilitated .... or sometimes they die. Jaguar has the highest success rate of the `teachers' but she has to shield her techniques as some people are afraid of empaths.

Jaguar has an ongoing case with a con artist, Adrian. As she sets up a con to get to his deepest fears, a high level assassin arrives under custody. The assassin, Claire, is as cold as an ice wall. Even Jaguar's supervisor, Alex, who is also an empath, cannot reach Claire's thoughts. The governmental directives on handling Claire include finding out who hired her for the latest assassin. Alex determines that the only one who might have a chance to discover Claire's secrets is Jaguar.

Jaguar is a survivor from the horrible Killing Times on earth when people went berserk and started killing in masses. Jaguar has never shared her history as a young child coming through the horrors of those years. But another co-worker, Nick, was a cop who helped get her off the streets. Nick is slipping in his abilities. He is angry, on the edge and jealous of Jaguar's successes. He wants to be part of her team to work with Claire but neither Alex or Jaguar trust him.

There is someone else, The Looker, who wants Claire eliminated before she can disclose her secrets. The Looker is connected to a government agency that has hidden plans to use technology to replace the empaths and take control. There is a traitor on Planetoid Three who is feeding information to The Looker and helping him to undermine Jaguar. Jaguar discovers clues to a plot and reports to Alex. When Alex goes to earth to investigate Jaguar has to break a few more rules to rescue him.

I liked the characters, even the cold Claire who ultimately shares childhood abuse stories with Jaguar. There is a bit of psychology jargon (or babble as I termed it in my head) entwined in the empath plotline and the criminal mindsets. This caused some confusion but I determined to read through that and enjoy the overall effect of the unique world and the fast paced suspense. When I completed this book I was curious how the relationship between Alex and Jaguar might change in the second story.

Caution - The story has some dark and twisted aspects involving abuse and murder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Justin's Review, April 16, 2008
This review is from: The Fear Principle (Paperback)
I am not a Big book reader but after reading this i am very anxious to read the other books that came after like i heard the Fear of God was another excellent book. If your into reading a interesting and very suspenseful book this is the book for you. I complete this read in 2 days and it was hard to put down. I always wanted to know what would happen next and had a couple exciting twists in it. This book isn't hard to get into right away it makes you think and keeps you reading page after page. It starts off with like 2-3 different stories going on at one time then they all kind of merge together for a great conclusion. I suggest going out and buying this book for yourself or for someone who is into books.
