This book was the most "out of left field" title I've ever received as a gift. I had no idea who the author was or what the book was about so I decided to give it my typical "20 pages to blow my mind" test. Less than 10 pages in I was fully hooked. It has EVERYTHING! Death, sex, horror, suspense, drug use... and it's not just done for shock value. I've been trying to read as many books as I can get my hands on in the past 9 months and this is the first one that literally had me on the edge of my seat. The writing is fantastic, the story is solid and the characters are brilliant! I couldn't put it down and now I'm left wanting another one from the author! This actually could be the best horror I've ever read.

I have read a lot of Horror.

For a while I read many Stephen King and Dean Koontz books. As I read them I began to notice patterns in the writing.

Stephen King wrote two hundred pages of "In a boring town in Maine, with boring people doing boring things, a horror was awakening." Two hundred pages later, with nothing having happened and the horror only hinted at, I was thinking "Wake up!"
To be fair, the resolution of his books was often brilliant.  Just the prelude was boring as bat dung.

Dean Koontz wrote books that dragged you from the first page, at breakneck speed. Begging to be read to find out what happens next. Brilliant! Then, with everything still unresolved, I would realize that there were only five pages left in the book! Huh?! And a brilliant, compelling book would finish "And the monster died and they all lived happily ever after."
The End. WTF?!

So I decided to write a horror novel that would grab the reader by the throat from the first line, "The night creatures were stalking her.", and drag them through to an extended, thrilling, unforeseen climax that would leave the reader breathless and satisfied.

This is the most amazing story I have read in a very long time. I could not stop reading it and at the same time did not want it to end. Sadness, joy, friendship, loyalty, terror, very graphic, horror beyond belief and yet very believeable. You now have a new loyal fan. I feel guilty that I got this for free. I would have gladly paid anything you asked. What a wonderful, wonderful story. Thank you so very much. I highly recommend this book...

Most horror writers have depended on European spooks, monsters and mythology in the work, especially vampires, which have evolved from zombie-like cemetery dwellers to sexy romantic men. Meanwhile, Down Under, the continent of Australia, especially its native peoples ("aboriginies") have developed their own visions.
Yet only the little-known early movies of Peter Weir (before he went to Hollywood) -- Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Last Wave -- have tried to make use of it.
Fear the Dark is a large, sweeping and ambitious book. The universe as we know it is ending, giving evil a chance to take over. Yet a few hardy Australians dare to fight evil and restore the world. They include a form of supernatural creature.
My main objection would be to restructure the beginning to explain what's going on.
Be warned: the body count is high.

Fear the Dark is truly a book that you cannot put down. Fast paced, brutal and raw, it leaves the reader constantly short of breath. The author's descriptive ability is amazing - I could see the scenes that he was describing.

Martin P Kerrigan was lucky enough to be born in Sydney, Australia between gen X and Gen Y. Growng up in the 1970s, he worked aimlessly at various jobs while spending his time enjoying the wonderful lifestyle of Sydney's Northern Beaches.

Dabbling in playing classical guitar, playing cricket, football, tennis and squash, he wrote his first books, Angel of the Mourning and The Ernie Effect.

Discovering wing chun kung fu in 1989, he studied the wonderful martial art and was recognized as a sifu by the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in 2011.

He has published three further, best selling novels on the Amazon Kindle platform.
