Editorial Reviews

Korn guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer approaches his instrument with a revolutionary spirit every time he picks it up. There's no better example than the self-titled debut from Shaffer's Fear and the Nervous System. It's a deeply personal, pummeling, and often poetic sonic undertaking that sees Shaffer in the director's chair. For the album, he assembled an all-star cast including Faith No More bass god Billy Gould, Bad Religion basher Brooks Wackerman, guitarist Leopold Ross, keyboardist Zac Baird, and enigmatic singer Steve Krolikowski [Repeater]. Together, they crafted a cerebral industrial metal drama of the highest order.

Great album, really did not expect it to be all that great.
Derrick
I've heard good things about Repeater but haven't listened to them yet so I was totally taken off guard by Steve Krolikowski's vocals.
Jonathan Anderson
Each instrument along with the vocals, doing it's own "thing", creates a fury of sound.

It's been a pretty crazy year to be a Korn fan. We're just coming off of Korn III - Remember Who You Are and the subsequent touring cycle and we already have The Path Of Totality (Special Edition)(CD/DVD) coming in a little over a month with two singles from it already on the scene. In addition to this, every single major member short of the drummers has had a solo project come out this year. Jonathan had his live solo album Jonathan Davis & The SFA: Live at The Union Chapel (CD/DVD), Fieldy has his Stillwell project's releases Dirtbag and the upcoming Surrounded by Liars EP, ex-guitarist Head has his new single Paralyzed with an EP to follow next year, and now Munky has his first release from his side project Fear and the Nervous System. There's a serious pedigree behind this band with members of bands such as Bad Religion and Faith No More in the lineup and given some of the bad press surrounding Korn and the side projects as of late it seemed to have, from a fan's perspective, quite a bit to live up to.

Luckily it does.

This is one of my favorite albums of the year. It leaps past Korn's sound and belongs in such company as A Perfect Circle and the Deftones. This album is extremely well produced and sounds wonderful. The instrumental elements are insanely good. Munky's always been a very technical player and his devotion to his craft shows here.

What this album is is a gathering of some exceptional musicians, and not much more can be said. The guitar riffs are heavy yet melodic, the drumming will blow the mind, the bass and keyboards tie it all together and the vocals are hypnotic and haunting with dark metaphorical lyrics. All in all its just great music. I was very impressed with Brooks Wakerman (Bad Religion) who did the drums, chocking victim for example is in 7/8 time signature and not easy to pull off, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Steve Krowlikowski (Repeater) laid down the vocals long after the album was finished, and no one could have done a better job. Just listen to the instrumentals and imagine the daunting task he had of writing lyrics and melodies for these monsters of songs. He is truly a talented singer and everyone should check out his other band, you wont regret it.

I wanted to make sure I reviewed this album so I could give it the 5 stars it deserves. However, I am at a near loss for words. How do you describe a beautiful work of art? The instrumentals are mind blowing, heavy and transporting. The vocals at times meld well and at other times pleasingly oppose the music. On track 7 "Triggers" the band has created the most amazing cacophonous sound. I know that usually isn't a compliment, but on that track there is so much going on and it works. Each instrument along with the vocals, doing it's own "thing", creates a fury of sound.
I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys good, heavy, original and creative music.

Great album, really did not expect it to be all that great. Best songs imo are Hell, Choking Victim, Slow Motion, and Ambien. My understanding is that this album was just an experiment more than anything, I can only hope some more stuff gets made under the same direction.
