5.0 out of 5 stars The review from Kirkus Discoveries, May 12, 2011
This review is from: The Fearful Fairy (Kindle Edition)
In this delightful picture book, Dixie the Fairy overcomes her fears to save a friend.
Young Dixie has a problem--while other fairies in Pixie Land are usually born with four wings, she has only two, and this causes her to get all tangled up and quit in defeat whenever she tries to fly. She is sad to discover that she just can't wish her situation away. But when a bumblebee is swept away in the river, Dixie decides her friend's predicament is more important than her fears. In choosing to forget herself she gains enough strength to fly to the rescue. Shaheen's illustrations provide just the right touch, particularly when imparting expressions of sympathy and encouragement in Dixie's bug friends, portraying surprise on a fish's face and depicting how Dixie plucked up the drenched bee, "grabbed him by his fuzzy stuff" and saved the day. Told in rhyme that does not miss a beat, this charming story delivers its moral with a light touch and gentle humor. Dixie is a heroine who chooses to be strong despite her insecurities and limitations, and learns to be happy with who she is, making this a tale that deserves to be read and reread many times over.
A good choice for young children who love fairies, and for parents and teachers who appreciate a valuable lesson delivered with wisdom and whimsy. --Kirkus Discoveries

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fearful Fairy, August 7, 2008
This review is from: The Fearful Fairy (Hardcover)
If you "believe" in fairies, you'll want to add this book to your collection. The Fearful Fairy is a charming book about believing you can do it and overcoming your fears and insecurities. It's a beautiful learning tool for children to build good self esteem and a reminder tool for adults who may need a boost. Even if none of these apply to you, it's still just a pleasant story to read. I fell in love with it when I was shopping in Mt. Dora, FL. Enjoy the magic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, August 6, 2007
This review is from: The Fearful Fairy (Hardcover)
Children often like to meld fantasy with real lives, which makes this book a wonderful tool to teach about self esteem and uniqueness. The illustrations are simply amazing, woodsy and gossamer, as if brushed by tiny wings. The enchanting drawings and the spirited fairy's plight kept my child entertained until the very end. This book is a must for children's collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing/Life Changing Book!!!!, August 5, 2007
This review is from: The Fearful Fairy (Hardcover)
The first time I read this book I was captivated by the beautiful lesson and gorgeous illustrations this magical book portrays! I have a 3 y/o son who asks for this book by name. My newborn's eyes light up every time I open this book to the bright colorful pages. I am a Special Ed. Teacher in Texas that works with emotionally disturbed children. My classroom is located in a children's hospital and my students are admitted to the hospital for emotional/behavioral reasons. I bring this book to class as part of my lesson on "believing in oneself". I have had more students approach me after reading this book with tears in their eyes wanting to open up and talk about why they feel different around other children. This book is therapy and motivation for my students!!!! Thank you to the author of this book for creating such a healing lesson on self-esteem! My Special Education Dept. will be ordering many more of this beautiful book!
