Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you're shy about using color, this is the book for you, because Meadows hasn't met a shade, tone, or hue she couldn't put to clever use."

(Valerie Easton Seattle Times)

"It reads like a colorist's memoir, complete with a muse named Emerald. Strong on fantasy, it's also a useful workbook for garden owners who need a nudge toward the more vibrant end of the color spectrum."

(LA at Home)

"The book jacket's eye-popping colors are just a prelude to the lush photos that lie within."

(Detroit Free Press)

“Meadows is a cheerleader for gardens full of color, and of gardeners unafraid to push their boundaries.”
(BloomingWriter blog)

“Meadows’ book, lavishly illustrated with her own photographs, offers basic guidelines for designing with color: pick a principal color, then work with harmonious and contrasting shades.”
(San Francisco Chronicle)

This is an art concept book... not a gardening book. That said, if you don't know how to apply color in gardens, it's gorgeous and will inspire you.

Don't expect consideration of plants.... in this world, they're chosen to match your color palette, not because they will thrive (or even live!) in the available environment.

If you're afraid of color, if you're already a gardener (or willing to channel one) go for it. If you're looking for more guidance about integrating real plants, art and real gardens, keep looking.

Wow! What a great book. Chuck full of delightfully written text accompanied by stunning photos of innventive and 'fearless' garden ideas. Keeyla's gardens reflect her infectious personality and original garden style. Gimme a cup of tea and this book and I'm set for the afternoon!

This books talks about colors; the color chart: primary colors, secondary colors; the meaning of colors, but what it doesn't talk about is how to implement those wonderful colors in your garden. The author spends a lot of time talking about her personal experiences with color. It is essentially a collection of essays about color -- and not very well written essays either. I expected to learn how to incorporate the brilliant colors of the color wheel into the garden; which plants work best with each other; some exciting new combinations. None of that happened. To the books credit, there are wonderful pictures of colorful containers and a few plants combos that are worthwhile. Garden art is a strong component in the book. With that said, Meadows does show us lots of pictures of very colorful gardens so that is a positive. Otherwise, this was a waste of my money and reading time.

This book, while it could be better organized, has wonderful methods for demystifying color combinations, and encourages you to play with color, and learn to see color in new ways. Yes, it is not a book about plant combinations per se. There are other books out there for that. But if you're willing to put in the time to explore color, you'll be ready for combining colors in your home, garden, printed designs, and more. I found the colors and art alone inspirational. I deducted a star because the information is somewhat randomly spread throughout the book, and the method could be stated more clearly. I've blogged about my experience with the book putting together container plantings at [..]

If you like funky art (and I do) and bright colors, this is the book for you. The author not only deals with flowers but treats the entire yard as an all encompasing environment. One thing that can make plant selection difficult is providing each plant's individual requirements. There is very little discussion of that. All in all, it's an enjoyable read.
