Creativity is a process,

This review is from: Fearless Design for Every Quilter: Traditional & Contemporary 10 Lessons Creativity & Critique (Paperback)
I loved this book. It teaches design, but it is personal too. It takes the reader into a fun classroom setting where real students learn a basic design principle, produce their own unique interpretations of the lesson, and then display their pieces for critique by the others. The critique was focused on how to improve the design using the design principles in the lessons. I can see that critique would be very helpful, but it would be scary too!
I will definitely share this book with my friends that quilt. I am anxious to see what we do!

Not just the author's viewpoint, but her students' viewpoint,

I love this book. I've read it twice, from cover to cover. This book is like taking a master's class. Although it looks simple when you page through it casually, the author gives assignments to each student to help them learn and discover more about various design principles. When the students are finished with each assignment, the other students critique it, saying what works and what doesn't and what the maker might have tried instead. I hope to use this as an exercise for a sub group of my quilt guild this winter. This could be done much like a round robin and done through the mails, if you'd like to do it with quilters around the country or around the world. And while the exercises are great, what's to keep you or me from changing them to meet our particular needs and goals?

These are good basic lessons. Torrance does a good job of presenting the challenges and also showing how several quilters interpreted the lessons. For an experienced designer they may be a bit tedious, but they make you slow down and remember the basics.
