5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information October 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the best and clearest of a number of books on finance that I have read in the period leading up to and just after my retirement. It is written from a Canadian point of view, but references US equivalents and clarifies tha principles underlying financial planning decisions that retirees and soon-to-be retirees must face in both countries.

5.0 out of 5 stars fearless retirement October 3, 2013
Finally a financial book is available that is understandable and makes sense.
Too many financial advisors tell us that we have to save millions in order to retire.
Frankly that scares a lot of us and we give up before we start.
Mr. Toner's advise in Fearless Retirement clears up a lot of that confusion and shows us that we can actually retire by following some simple steps.
He shows us how to avoid the scams. He tells us how to find advisors that will recommend investments that are best for us, rather than recommend investments that pay the advisor the highest commission.
This book is a real how to book which helps not only those near retirement, but those at any stage of their life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Retirement Took Kit October 1, 2013
This book is an excellent source of information to prepare for a financially secure retirement. The author shares a wealth of knowledge in a very simplistic and easy to understand manner. The book is well organized, with part 1 describing retirement risks and challenges and part 2 presenting the framework needed to mitigate the risks. The financial advisor checklist and the worksheets in the appendices provide the tools needed to apply the concepts that are explained in the book. Another valuable resource, included with the book, is access to the author's website that provides electronic copies of the worksheets and checklists from the textbook, as well as current interviews and pod casts. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants practical help in achieving the retirement of his or her dreams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fearless Retirement October 7, 2013
Conrad Toner's approach to both investing and retirement is refreshing and thought provoking. As an lawyer heavily involved in Estate Planning I am constantly referring my clients to this insightful work. I highly recommend this book not only to those nearing retirement, but to anyone who hopes one day to retire.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very general and a bit complex October 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this a good general overview of a particular method of planning for retirement income. I found it a bit short on specifics and details. Some of the solutions that were referenced included products that I think are somewhat misleading to investors using their portfolio to produce income. For example I felt there was too much deference to mutual funds, which for someone with limited capital, may want to employ, but the target of this book is those with considerable money and mutual funds are a poor option, given the multitude of hidden fees and lack of liquidity.

I also found the solutions indicated unduly complex. The ordinary person would have a difficult time following the various steps and pots for allocating funds. I’m a professional accountant with an MBA and many years working in finance, and I have a fairly substantial portfolio, and I found it complicated.

From a personal and practical perspective, I found little in the way of tools and techniques that I could use as I head into retirement in the next year or so.

I commend the author for taking the time to share his experience and insights and I think it is worthwhile reading; it's just not the ultimate solution.

Today is one of those rare lazy Saturdays when there is nothing pressing to do. Work's been crazy lately, so a day without any responsibility has come as a godsend, and I've been taking full advantage of it. Sitting on my porch I've been reading the newspaper, coffee in hand, while a gentle rain falls. Occasionally I glance up from the paper to watch the world go by, and that's when I see it. A brilliant, colourful and vibrant rainbow has formed across the sky. It seems to begin right in front of my house, and yet the other end is so far off in the distance, I can't quite get a handle on where it ends. One thing's for sure: it is the closest I have ever been to a rainbow, and the colours are absolutely magnificent.

Author sets the mood and begins to paint a picture of what we wish retirement looked like. Just started this one. So far, pretty good. I recently read God's Provision in Tough Times - 25 True Stories of God s Provision During Unemployment and Financial Despair (Christian Spiritual Growth) and found that helpful, too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Save for Retirement (but earn more than you spend) March 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very detailed account on what you should do for your future.

It takes a definite type of person who can think into the future and plan ahead and inside this book there are plenty of suggestions on how anyone with a strong will and some disposable income to invest.

It's well worth the effort to at least follow one of the suggestions in this book.
