A book packed with curriculum ideas!,
By St. Louis teacher (St. Louis) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Feast for 10 (Hardcover)
This book has been around for a long time, but it continues to be a favorite in my classroom. It's one of those simple books that sparks so many different curriculum paths! Counting, number groupings, nutrition, cooperation, family activities, word choices, story writing, and more. It has also initiated collage art projects, quilt making, and paper mache vegetables! FEAST FOR 10 is a goldmine. I see that it's coming out in a board book soon, too. We have both the hardcover and several paperbacks in my class.

This is a wonderful book. I have been using it for years in special education and preschool settings. Children always respond to the excellent illustrations and simple text. The pages easily correspond with the text making it a very satisfying counting and retelling experience.

Feast For 10,
By Mica Jade (Anaheim, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Feast for 10 (Paperback)
A sweet 1-10 counting book that has a nice rhyme scheme and builds its story by counting to ten, not once, but twice. The art designs feature a black extended family, however, this is not central to the story. What is emphasized is the feeling of family warmth and cooperation throughout as everyone pitches in to create the feast for ten. Children can also count the items in each picture that correspond to the poem. Well done.

This is a delightful preschool or kindergarten age counting book about an Afro-American family shopping and preparing a holiday meal together. The illustrations are large and colorful, making the book good for group storytimes.

It's so nice to see a black family in a book where it's *not* all about being black,
By Ulyyf "Connie" (NYC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Feast for 10 (Paperback)
Or about living in Africa, or living in the past, or some sort of troubles (modern or historical). It's so nice to just see a family doing what families *do*. (They even recycle!)
My nieces ask me to read this book to them often. It's a very fast book, suitable both for very young children and for slightly older ones. We love looking at various details - like the fact that "five kinds of beans" includes JELLY beans, or the fact that the baby sits on a lap at dinner. It's just a quick, sweet book.

Depicts Black people without being about racism,
By Should Be Doing Laundry (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Feast for 10 (Paperback)
We make sure at least 50% of the books we check out or buy depict non-White folks, as we are an adoptive family and I have a Black son along with three homegrown kiddos. I have noticed, most of those books we've found about African Americans, the ones not from Africa, are about racism, which I think is *vital* to talk about with kids, and we do, but I don't want every. single. book with Black people in it to be about racism. It gets heavy for the toddler and preschool set sometimes. This book is perfect!!!!! Illustrations are darling, we love it. For an extensive list of the children's books we've checked out or bought that are from other cultures, countries or just have non-White characters, follow this link: [....]

Mommy loves the book more than the kid,
This review is from: Feast for 10 (Paperback)
I absolutely love this book. I request it when I am reading to my child. We read this book every night. It was a gift and I will be purchasing more books to give as gifts. The story is sweet, it gives a feeling of warmth and comfort and it is just about what families do, not african american families, just families. I love it!!!

A Good Pick for Toddlers and Preschoolers,
By Shanna A. Gonzalez "eyelevelbooks.com" (Gaithersburg, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Feast for 10 (Paperback)
Feast For 10 is a warm, rhythmic story about a family taking a trip to the grocery store and preparing a meal to enjoy together. Each page introduces a number with an action: "One cart into the grocery store/ Two pumpkins for pie/ Three chickens to fry..." and so on, counting up to ten twice.
The book has much to commend it: on a cultural level, the story features a large family, which is cheerfully cooperative and hardworking without being annoyingly sweet. The children play an important role in the food preparation, and the ritual of sharing a meal together helps underscore their familial unity. On an aesthetic level, this well-written book is illustrated with high-quality collage art, and it easily incorporates the counting exercise without detracting from the story. Because of its rhythm and rhyme, it will be well received by a preschool and early elementary audience.

So good, my daughter's teacher requested it,

A very sweet and very simple book. Nice to see a family of color in a book for a change.... so my daughter gets a nice variety. My daughter's teacher requested books for the classroom as her Christmas Gift this year... so that should be a selling point! So sweet that the teacher wanted it! :)
