Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- An in-depth introduction to the unique body covering of birds. Basic feather structure is explained, and a simple description of the six different kinds of feathers and their importance is given. The function of coloration in mating behavior and as protective camouflage is also delineated. The final section of the book discusses how people have utilized feathers through time. Beautiful full-color photographs elucidate the text. The Austins' Random House Book of Birds (Random, 1970; o.p.) contains a short section on feathers. George F. Mason's Animal Clothing (Morrow, 1955; o.p.) also has a chapter on feathers. Both of these books are illustrated with drawings, and neither presents the wealth of information found here. --Barbara B. From Kirkus Reviews

Clearly written, carefully organized, enhanced with striking color photos: a superior science title guaranteed to reveal things you never knew about the structures that make birds unique. Patent describes the form and function of the six different types of feathers and discusses their relation to flight, growing and molting, keeping birds warm or cool, and the role of color in camouflage and attracting mates. The details here are fascinating: The owl's densely packed face feathers help it hunt by gathering and focusing sound; the metallic sheen of herons is caused by ``powder-down'' feathers; the hummingbird's iridescence is due to twisted barbules coated with three thin films that trap air bubbles and reflect light. Challenging reading, but well worth the effort. Technical terms are italicized and defined in the text. Index. (Nonfiction. 10+) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

More About the Author

Every since I was a child I've loved nature and animals. I spent my time out of doors, picking flowers and scooping tadpoles out of ponds. So it's no wonder I studied biology and became an author myself of a favorite gift when I was young, a book about nature. I've expanded into other fascinating areas of nonfiction, too, especially historical topics of the American west, such as Lewis and Clark and Native Americans.
My work has given me the gift of travel to all sorts of fascinating places such as the Galapagos Island, the Costa Rican Rain Forest, and the famous cave at Lascaux, France, full of amazing ancient art that is no longer open to visitors.
