About the Author

Grandma Garrison was Nancy's mentor while she made her first quilt in 1972. Gram asked her to cut a 6-inch square template from paper and pin it on some fabric. Using regular scissors, quite dull, Nancy cut around the paper template. After cutting about two dozen squares, she noticed some of the squares were not the same size. Nancy called Gram and said, "My blocks don't seem to be the same size." Gram replied, "Are you cutting any of the paper template off when you cut around it?" Nancy replied, "No, only once in a while!" That was Nancy's first lesson in accuracy and it has stuck with her all these years. Today her hallmark is accuracy, and she stresses it with students and attributes the wide recognition of her work to its continued emphasis. She has written several best-selling books, including Featherweight 221: The Perfect Portable, and Rotary Magic. Nancy also refined how to work with squares and rectangles in her other best-selling books Block Magic; Block Magic, Too!; and Stars by Magic. Recently she was granted a U.S. patent for her innovative technique used for making Eight-Point Stars from squares and rectangles. Nancy has been a spokesperson and consultant for Omnigrid, a division of Prym Consumer USA, Inc., for over eighteen years. Her hobbies include reading mysteries, traveling to see children and grandchildren, working in her flower gardens (they keep expanding), and making baby quilts for charity. In recent years she has donated over 600 quilts to brighten the lives of needy children and parents. Nancy lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Frank.

NJS is known in the quilting world for her patterns, books and teaching but she is also an expert in the Featherweight world. In this book, she shares her vast knowledge of Featherweight history, lots of valuable instruction manual info (since many of our machines no longer have them) and great troubleshooting advice. A must read!

This little purple book, which I got on Amazon.com, is worth it's weight in gold. Includes charts to help you find the Birth Date (mfg) of your machine, where different models came from, a bit about colors. Several good photos and good clear drawings to help you get that bobbin case back in correctly, where to oil and where to grease - how often - and what to use. AND it will slide right down in your case with the machine.

This book mixes "how to" with history and a touch of humor. For those of us who need larger print than the traditional (and detailed) repair manual, this is a delight. The book is written about a home-sewing icon which helped to make life better for families since it's beginning in the 1930's.

If your like me and get the Featherweight bug you need this book for your collection even if your collection consists of one, we all start with just one. I bought the kindle version because I only had one at the time, now I have 4 of these ladies and wish I had purchased the hard copy to display with my collection. I also suggest you purchase this book before you buy your FW so you know what to look for. There's all these little things about the FW that makes each one unique IE why is a 1951 more valuable than a 1948. Why you shouldn't pass one up because it smells (simple fix).
Buy the book you won't be disappointed.

I was a little disappointed with this book. I had already read every thing in the book on the internet. I had even printed most of the information free from a 221 website.
No new information in this publication.

If you have or are interested in the Singer Featherweight sewing machines then this is a good book to have. It is a great historical reference as it explains the differences between the machines over the years that it was produced.
If you are looking for a repair manual then this is NOT the book for you. It does have some excerpts in it from an original manual but will not be very useful if you are trying to use it to rescue an old machine in need of repair.
Otherwise it is a very good and interesting read.

I purchased this book for my 14 yr old granddaughter because it is a wonderful book of instruction on the machine and its attachements. I have the same book and always refer to it. The history of the Featherweight is also valuable history info.
I also bought my granddaughter a Featherweight 221, because it is lightweight and sews beautifully. I love Mine.

If your into using, collecting, or purchasing featherweights this is your book. The Singer featherweight is the only sewing machine that has lasted through history and this is their encyclopedia. Great information in general to date a featherweight, learn about their evolution and just to use one new to you. Also, lets a person know what they may in interested in purchasing.
