5.0 out of 5 stars I love this thing!
Who would have thought I'd fall in love with an air freshner?? I never buy air freshners (plug in's, gels, plastic domes, etc...) because they just look tacky when seen. The Febreeze Flameless air freshner puts all other air freshner designs to shame. Place the decorative 'scented' sleeve on the square base and several flickering lights activate for four hours before...

3.0 out of 5 stars Day by Day Review, July 2, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The below is my day by day review of the Febreze Luminary Starter Kit (Green Tea Citrus scent). Each scent last for about a week so I waited until after a full 7 days to write this to give an accurate description of how this works at either eliminating odors or at least masking them.

Day 1 - Decided to set this up in our living room on or first floor. Our house is fairly open so I thought this might be a good place to get the scent throughout the entire floor of about 1000 square feet. When I opened it, I was pleasantly surprised at the look of the air freshener and the great scent that the green tea citrus put out. The scent is located on a square paper cover that sits on the base. Once it is placed on the base, it gives off a candle like flicker for about 4 hoarse until you remove the paper square for a second and then put it back on. We placed it on our mantle and went on with our business. Within 30 minutes, I heard the basement door open and my wife came down with the air freshener and said, "way too strong. Starting to make me sick". So it ended up in my home theater room in the basement. Within 15 minutes, all I could smell was green tea citrus which was now starting to smell bad!

Day 2 - Went to my basement and the room just reeked of the smell. The best way I can describe how strong the smell was is by comparing to one of those car air fresheners shaped like a tree. You are only supposed to open it layer by layer by pulling it up through the plastic but there are those individuals that think it's a good idea to just rip it out of the package causing the entire car to smell like cheap perfume. In this case, it smells better than perfume but it makes the air real thick in the room. If you have breathing problems, day 2 is not better than day 1.

Day 3 - Getting better. Still strong but I can at least sit down there without "seeing" the scent float by me.

Day 4 - Similar to day 3. Man, this thing is strong!

Day 5 - OK, I am starting to dig the light scent leftover. Not strong but not so faint that you can't notice it.

Day 6 - I can barely smell it now but I also don't smell any type of odors in the basement so I guess it is still working

Day 7 -Same as day 6. I can smell it a little. It reminds me of a scented plug-in air freshener when it is near its end. I think I will keep the current air freshener on a another couple of days to see how it works beyond its recommended time period.

Overall it would be hard to recommend this to someone who plans on putting it in a small room. The first few days would make it unbearable unless you like thick heavy smells. Yes, it smells nice but too much of a good thing is usually bad! I would say keep it in a wide open space until around day 3 before moving it to a more confined space.

I am not sure if I will use the second refill that came with the starter kit. While it smells OK right now, I don't think I want to deal with 2 day exile from my home theater room in my basement. Also, I haven't seen any prices on the refills for this device so it could end up being much more expensive than a plug-in or old fashioned air freshener.

I will say that the design is nice and the flickering light gives off a nice ambience. It can definitely fill a void in a nice room without looking like an air freshener so I may consider using this in my living room more for that than an actual air freshener.

Who would have thought I'd fall in love with an air freshner?? I never buy air freshners (plug in's, gels, plastic domes, etc...) because they just look tacky when seen. The Febreeze Flameless air freshner puts all other air freshner designs to shame. Place the decorative 'scented' sleeve on the square base and several flickering lights activate for four hours before turning off (to reactivate the light, just lift up the sleeve and set it down again). It looks like a very pretty paper lantern and the flickering lights mimick the appearance of a lit candle perfectly. The sleeve has lost it's scent, but we still use it anyways for when we want some mood lighting without lighting a candle. The kids have used it as a night light when sleeping over, just to help them fall asleep. Great idea! I will buy more of these when I get around to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Smell for One Use!, July 4, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
We loved the smell of the Green Tea Citrus. It replicates a candle lit lantern nicely. It is quite attractive overall. We liked everything about it except that the scent only lasted for a few hours. I thought it would last longer. I now would consider this like any other one use scented candle that you have to replace after a single use. The scent is in the shade itself, which comes in a sealed bag. When you place the decorative shade on the base it presses down on a button which triggers the base to flicker for 4 hours. It doesn't actually cause the scent to release or anything like that. Once you open the scent bag you have started the countdown on the scent time. The base only gives the candle effect. You can lift the shade off the base to stop the flicker or let it time out after 4 hours. You can take the shade off and put it back on to start another 4 hour cycle. The base runs on a single AAA battery that lasts for a long time considering the tiny bulb than flickers. I just wish the scent lasted longer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where's the smell?, December 9, 2009
I've given this product a very fair chance.....I've changed the shade several times in an effort to get the fragrance to last beyond the first day. I've not been successful. After placing the shade on the luminary base, the fragrance is quite overpowering, but by the second day, no smell at all. I consider this product a real waste of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too strong-Non-existent smell!, November 17, 2009

I was excited with this new air freshener. I am scared of the plug in types and with having a one and three year old candles are scarey. I bought this and was so excited. When I first put it together it was so strong!!! I really thought I would be throwing it out because of the overpowering smell. About 2 days later it was fine, but within 3 or 4 days the smell was totally gone. For what you pay this is a bummer. I would think you should get more time from the scent. Unfortunately after using the second shade the battery is dead and I need to fix that if I want to use it again. I truly think this is not worth the money!

1.0 out of 5 stars Decorative item, not much more...., July 16, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have been a longtime user of Febreze items and have usually found myself very satisfied with their quality. Unfortunately, the Febreze Home Collections Green Tea Citrus Flameless Luminary fails to live up to standards in Febreze's line of products. It looks great on an endtable in a living room, giving off the look of a soothing flickering candle. The problem is, the scents give off an overpowering aroma for the first day of use, and then you can't smell them at all after that. Because of this, I have to say that this was a very bad execution of a good idea, and I don't plan on buying any further refills for this item unless they come out with an improved way for the scent to be released. I cannot recommend this product until then, unless of course you just want a decorative item for a table.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great candle, lousy air freshener, July 19, 2010
I don't buy these for the scent, so much as the design. It makes a terrific little accent light, night light or mood lighting. I love that they're flameless and the design fits into my decor. It's a very clever feature that you turn it on by taking the shade off and on and that it turns off in 4 hours. Brilliant. Once in a while, I will replace the shade, but the scent is overwhelming at first and quickly dissipates to nothing.

I have several of these scattered around the house - they're addicting!

This appears to be a a hig-quality product, with a a nice build ( wood base, LED flicker effect) and certainly does offer a room filling scent.

As others have noted, the unit is pre-loaded with the battery, and all you need to do is open the foil pack with the paper shade and place it on the unit. ( it will NOT light up without the shade in place).

The scent is only related to the shade itself, the candle effect with the flickering light is just that- a very well done special effect.

I love the look, clearly a far east theme, and when the unit is turned on there is a warm yellow glow that replicates a real candle to perfection.

In fact the unit is so attractive one might feel like buying a few......BUT...... Out of the foil pack, the scent on the shade is VERY strong - in some ways amazing if one wants to fill a room or two with a noticeable (very) scent.

After a few days, it does calm down to a level of what you might smell if you were to brew several pots of green tea.

* I MUCH prefer it after a few days! *

Unless you have a huge home, I would NOT buy several to use at once, certainly not in the same room! ( it is quite tempting, as the unit is VERY attractive ).

Though probably not exactly intended, I did notice that when I put the unit on my balcony in my apartment, not only did it look nice-but go figure-- no bugs! Thus, I could see them being used outside!

All in all, I truly think the look is great, but the out of the box effect can be overpowering. The automatic shut off of the flickering effect in 4 hours is very nice as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a great idea!, June 29, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Do you like the atmosphere created by candles? Do you like the lovely smells that scented candles provide? But, do you have pets or chiildren and you're afraid of starting a fire from burning a candle??? Do you work in an office or other setting where a real flame is not something you would want to have? Well, this product is for you!

This little item is about 4" square and appears to be a lighted candle with the flickering flame etc., and it gives off a lovely scent, but it runs on two batteries. The instructions said that it would glow or flicker for 4 hours, but I found that it actually worked for about 4 1/2 hours, and then it shuts off automatically. To get it started again, all you need to do is turn it off then on again, and you get another four hours of good smells.

I liked this citrus scent, but my husband loved it! He has a very sensitive sense of smell and he remarked several times about how good it smelled - so that is a plus as far as I'm concerned.

The only drawback to this is, of course, the batteries, but they far outweigh the hazard of a real flame.

1.0 out of 5 stars Scent doesn't last! Waste of money., October 14, 2010
By
Dawn (White Plains, NY, US) - See all my reviews
I had to give this product one star even though it is nice looking. The scent was way too strong when I first attached the "shade," but then the scent was already gone by the very first evening! I certainly didn't expect to have to replace the shade EVERY DAY in order to have scent (which was the whole reason I purchased the product). Very disappointed and upset that I wasted my money.
