Patti Smith performs with guitarist Lenny Kaye for the first time at a poetry reading with musical accompaniment at St. Marks Church on New York's Lower East Side. The concert is a true historical document and one of the most important events in the birth of punk rock!

This review is from: February 10, 1971 (Audio CD)
Let the buyer be aware-this entire CD is about twenty-seven minutes long, including Anne Waldman's introduction. What sounds like two strategically-placed microphones captures the earliest Patti Smith recording that I've yet to hear. So, not a state-of-the-art recording then. But, for anybody wanting to hear how the Patti Smith Group all began, you can't get much closer than Patti's voice and Lenny Kaye's tiny guitar amp. Except for Patti's individual poems captured on the Giorno Poetry Systems LPs of the seventies, there aren't many other pieces of this era of the birth of N.Y. punk/new wave to be found. Look at this recording as a missing link. Thanks to Mer Records, and please madame, may I have some more!
