I picked up this album on vinyl. Just an impulse purchase, I suppose. I saw the critical acclaim on the record sleeve's wrapping, and saw it under the 'avant-garde' section, so I thought that it must be at least worth listening to.

Overall, this is a superb album. Jonathan Kane introduces to the listener what I call "Techno Blues". The music has progressions similar to techno - repeating the same lick many times through, changing it in minor amounts, until the song sounds entirely different than how it started. It's a magnificent new idea, one I've never heard stylistically. This album certainly deserved its placement under the 'avant-garde' section!

I would probably not recommend this to listeners that have a short attention span, or aren't fans of harmony-based compositions (where one instrument is not always the dominant, often found in the blues). This album easily glides through its fourty-something minutes and never once becomes dull. This is an exciting album, but not hyperactive - perfect for cruising down the street with the windows in the car open during the summer. Of course, if you're a New Yorker like me and discovered Jonathan Kane simply because you live in the downtown Village area, then driving is probably not an option for you. In that case, turn on your hi-fi, dim the lights, and just chill out to this music, because it's perfect for that exact application!

I took off one star because, while it's very original and ground breaking, there is only one KIND of innovation being made here. It definitely should be an important addition to any music lover's collection, though, so long as they are able to handle the density of the music found within.

I'd never really thought about who was handling the drums behind the early Swans and against a freaking battalion of guitars in Rhys Chatham, but now that I think about it, I didn't see the tree for the forest.

Well, Mr. Lane has dropped the accompaniment and set the forest on fire.

"Sis" is like a freight train you can't see, but it keeps getting closer. After a couple of minutes, you realize somebody has tied you to the tracks. My neighbor thought I was holding a Taiko drum festival - but no, it's just Mr. Lane on the guitar, bass and drums...

Can't wait for March.

What a piece of garbage. Very poor music. Hope to hear his newest effort. Heard a good cut on Electric Blues.
