Das in Downtown Chicago gelegene Federal Center wurde von Mies 1959-64 errichtet: ein 30-stöckiges und ein 42-stöckiges Hochhaus sowie der Flachbau für das Postamt. Mies konnte bei diesem Grossauftrag Stahl, sein bevorzugtes Material, vollumfänglich einsetzen. Diese drei unterschiedlichen Volumen bilden einen dynamischen Stadtraum. Auf der dadurch geformten eindrücklichen Plaza wirkt Alexander Calders Stahlplastik Flamingo als der perfekte Abschluss. Werner Blaser bringt die offensichtlichen und verborgenen strukturellen und ästhetischen Qualitäten dieses Werks durch einfühlsame Duotone-Aufnahmen voll zur Geltung.
