Book Description

July 2001
This magnificent catalogue, published to accompany the National Gallery of Australia's landmark exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of statehood, offers an opportunity to enjoy, through the visual arts, some of the fascinating stories of the nation, a visual history of its progress as a people, society, and nation. While celebrating Australia's indigenous heritage, it also recognizes the contribution of people from all over the world who have settled there. The important and intriguing works seen here, along with the informative text, celebrate the depth and diversity of Australia, including its indigenous communities, multiculturalism, sporting heroes, youth, cities, and the bush. They offer many visual openings to the rich cultural landscape that exists in Australia and demonstrate significant movements within the development of the visual arts during the century. Following an insightful and provocative introductory essay, "From Gallipoli to Homebush Bay," by John McDonald, curator of the exhibition, the book is organized by chapters, each with its own essay: The Land; Cities and Suburbs; Boom and Bust; Patriotic Duty; At Ease; Encounters; and Designing the Australian Experience.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The visual arts exhibition "Federation" debuted at the National Gallery of Australia (in Canberra) in December 2000 and will be traveling to venues throughout that country until July 2002. In one of the book's forewords, Australian Prime Minister John Howard expresses his hope that people will visit the exhibition as part of their centenary celebrations. Although the exhibit itself is not coming to the United States, Americans at least have the pleasure of this lushly illustrated exhibition catalog. McDonald, the exhibition curator and head of Australian art at the gallery, was assisted with the text by 14 other specialists (most also from that institution), whose initials are noted after their contributions. The exhibit spans the century, focusing on a number of themes such as the land, cities and suburbs, and boom and bust. Different media expressions include Aboriginal mythological creations on bark, British-influenced oil portraits, souvenir ephemera from 1901, watercolor town views, World War I prints, ceramics, abstract sculpture, and photographic records of modern life. The eyeopening cultural diversity of this book makes it highly recommended for all public and academic libraries. Anne Marie Lane, American Heritage Ctr., Univ. of Wyoming, Laramie
