Book Description

December 15, 2008
This book examines Fedora 10 for the user. Though administrative tools are covered, the emphasis is on what a user would need to know to perform tasks. The emphasis here is on what users face when using Fedora, covering topics like installation, applications, software management, the GNOME and KDE desktops, shell commands, and both the Fedora administration and network tools. Desktop effects as implemented by GNOME's Compiz-fusion and KDE's KWin are examined. New features are covered in detail like Network Manager with support for wireless 3G and Ethernet, Fedora Printing and PackageKit's new interface, recovery with FirstAidKit, and the RPM Fusion repository for free and nonfree third party packages like multimedia codecs. Also additional desktops and installs are reviewed including XFCE, LXDE, Sugar (OLPC), and Omega (multimedia).

Then office, multimedia, mail, and Web applications are examined. It includes coverage of the PulseAudio sound interface and a review of the Java OpenJDK and Omega multimedia spin. Part 3 covers the two major desktops, GNOME and KDE4, discussing features like panels, applets, and file manager views. Desktop effects (compositing window managers) for both GNOME and KDE are covered. Unique KDE4 features like the dashboard and the Zoom User Interface are also explored. In addition, the shell interface is also explored, including features like history, file name completion, directory and file operations, among others. Part 4 deals with administration topics, first discussing system tools like the GNOME system monitor, the Disk Usage Analyzer, temperature monitors, and SELinux configuration tool. Then a detailed chapter on Fedora system administration tools for managing users, the date and time, is presented, along with service management and file system access.
