About the Author

Christopher Negus has been working with UNIX systems, the Internet, and (most recently) Linux Systems for more than two decades. During that time, Chris worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, UNIX System Laboratories, and Novell, helping to develop the UNIX operating system. Features from many of the UNIX projects Chris worked on at AT&T have found their way into Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, and other Linux systems.
Chris is the author of all editions of what started out as Red Hat Linux Bible, which because of the name changes of Red Hat's Linux Projects has evolved into the book you are holding. Most recently, Chris co-authored three books in the Linux Toolbox series: Fedora Linux Toolbox, Ubuntu Linux Toolbox, and SUSE Linux Toolbox (Wiley Publishing, 2007).
Before that, Chris authored Linux Bible 2008 Edition and co-wrote Linux Troubleshooting Bible and Linux Toys II for Wiley Publishing. During the past few years, Chris has written several books on UNIX and the Internet, including Internet Explorer 4 Bible and Netscape Plug-Ins For Dummies for Wiley Publishing. He also co-wrote several books for Que Publishing, including The Complete Idiot's Guide to Networking (Second and third editions) and Using UNIX (second edition).

3.0 out of 5 stars Covers a lot of ground, February 29, 2008

This review is from: Fedora 8 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Bible (Paperback)
3lbs of Fedora Core 8 goodness. This is more like an end-user/junior sysadmin bible though. It covers a _LOT_ of ground -- everything from installation to configuration to deploying network services, the bible goes step by step. In some cases, the bible offers a more complete set of documentation than manuals from Red Hat.

The book doesn't delve into the nitty-gritty of Linux. For example, rolling a custom kernel is out. Probably for good reason though since most people probably won't need to do that. Things like strace or deep security concepts are best researched using other books.

RHEL5 is an after-thought in this bible. Do not buy if you are looking for lots of RHEL specific topics.

Still, for a Fedora Core end-user or someone starting out in sysadmin field, this bible will deliver the goods.

4.0 out of 5 stars very in depth book about the latest edition of Fedora and RHEL, February 15, 2008
This review is from: Fedora 8 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Bible (Paperback)
This is a great textbook. The author goes all out in this book to explain how to use Fedora productively. He explains every little corner you can possibly think of. From how the file system is set up and different from windows to setting up different types of servers. The book is easy to follow along and is pretty much step by step the further you get into the book. I recommend this book to anyone that is just starting out using Linux because of its ease of use and in depth explanations. The cool thing about this book is that it can be used practically with any Linux OS. I tried it out with Ubuntu and everything I've accomplished so far in Fedora I have been able to do in Ubuntu.

5.0 out of 5 stars Linux For the Curious, February 13, 2008

This review is from: Fedora 8 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Bible (Paperback)
This book with its companion CD/DVD is about the only thing you need to get started with Linux, besides a computer, of course. I tried Linux with Fedora 3 several years ago, and things have really improved with Fedora 8. The writing is superb, at least so far. I'm only on about page 182. There are over 1000 pages. Linux is not for everybody, but if you are curious what it is all about, this book is a great place to start. You can try Linux without installing anything, if you like, from the CD. Or you can install as much as you want from the DVD. A lot of open source software is included: Firefox, Open Office, etc. I even downloaded and installed Picasa. Linux is not for the casual computer user, but if you've read this far...
