What a perfect book for all grandparents-to-be to give their expectant, or soon-to-be expectant, daughters and daughters-in-law. Much better than our outdated and possibly resented advice! Although this book is so delightful, Grandma will probably read it first or buy two copies and keep one for herself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't a bad book, wasn't a great book
It was an okay book. What to expect when expecting has a lot of the same information plus tons more. This book does go more indepth on what foods give you certain nutrients etc.. Recipes are okay. I use a lot of the organic ingredients they call for but I don't think it's something everyone can afford or would be able to find at their local grocery store. I think they...

What a perfect book for all grandparents-to-be to give their expectant, or soon-to-be expectant, daughters and daughters-in-law. Much better than our outdated and possibly resented advice! Although this book is so delightful, Grandma will probably read it first or buy two copies and keep one for herself.

Largeman-Roth takes the reader on the journey from pre-pregnancy through the child's birth and breast feeding. As an encouraging, never judgmental coach, she explains how pregnant mothers can best take care of themselves and their babies by discussing what foods are healthiest and why. In a supportive tone, she offers the mother-to-be realistic advice on everything from food cravings to dealing with gas to healthy snacks to eating out at fast food places to drinking enough water to surviving morning sickness to best equipping your kitchen.

Largeman-Roth must have a great sense of humor--this book is fun! It's also remarkably easy to read and understand despite the large amount of nutritional information it contains. There is nothing dry or boring in "Feed the Belly". Largeman-Roth makes it all seem simple. She comes across like a helpful confidante who wants you to follow her advice without being compulsive about eating healthy.

There's a whole chapter on exercise--something that other pregnancy nutrition books skip completely. It includes a list of places to buy hard-to-find maternity exercise clothes, as well as a list of yoga poses that are safe for pregnancy. With obesity such a looming issue these days, Largeman-Roth does the reader a great service by encouraging pregnant women to get--and stay--active. And that's good news for your grandkids too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Information!, March 28, 2011

This review is from: Feed the Belly: The Pregnant Mom's Healthy Eating Guide (Paperback)
When I purchased this book I was looking for a new approach on nutrition with my pregnancy. I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and wanted to start off with a very nutrious diet. This is my 4th prenancy and would say experienced at this point. However, when it came to nutrition with my other pregnancies I was not as concerned as I am now. So when I came across this book I was very excited. I received the book within 4 days I believe (very suprised!) There is very good information in the book about healthy tips and ways to help with morning sickness. This came very handy for me because I was as sick a dog for the first 2 months. There was also information in the book that being a mother of 3 I still didn't know. The only disappointment I have are the recipes. I was wanting to find a book that had easy to make and easy to find ingredients. Don't get me wrong there are lots of simple snack ideas and opprotunity for substitution, however some of the recipes (for me personally) are not realistic. I have to shop for 3 children and a husband. It's very time constraining and money consuming to buy groceries just for me. Overall I would highly recommend this book to first time mother's or even second time mothers. What the hay!!! It was great for this 4th time mother to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nutrition made easy for expecting moms..., August 26, 2010
This review is from: Feed the Belly: The Pregnant Mom's Healthy Eating Guide (Paperback)
I loved this book. Happened on it by accident and it turned out to be great. As a first time mom you have so many questions about what you should be doing nutritionally for you and the baby. This book makes it easy to understand. It outlines what kind of food will get you the vitamins you need with super easy recipes that actually taste good to incorporate them. I'm still making some of the recipes and my daughter is now 4 months old. And now I'm buying the book for two of my newly pregnant girlfriends. Absolutely recommend!

If you're trying to get pregnant or are pregnant, this is a book to have on your must-read list! These days when pregnant women everywhere are told what to eat and what not to eat and considering that eating is one of the things always on our minds, it's nice to have a guide that takes all of these things into consideration. This book not only discusses amounts of nutrients needed and how to get them, but yummy recipes to use that are "pregnancy safe". It's an easy read that will give you many, "I didn't know that!" moments. My favorite parts of the book are the "Belly Tips." Small tips throughout each chapter that provide you with creative ideas to use like -- how to drink more water and get more folic acid. Seems simple, but Largeman-Roth really provides easy tips that make you say, "What a great idea!" You'll love it from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars My wife's super book!, May 1, 2009
This review is from: Feed the Belly: The Pregnant Mom's Healthy Eating Guide (Paperback)
Ok, this won't appear as the most objective opinion, but she's my wife, she's great at what she does, and I love her!

When she was planning this book, Frances explained the information gaps that exists in the current books available to moms-to-be, and how Feed the Belly could fill them.

As she began researching/writing the book, I got pulled into the process, and came away with the same understanding. A lot of the books out there for moms-to-be cover a wide range of topics, and often sound-at best- clinical, and-at worst-boring or fright-inducing. (We read some of them when we were expecting our baby girl)

So I've read the advance copy, was one of the test subjects who ate all the recipes, and even cooked a few myself. The book is an easy, good read, and the food is good. (for healthy food. I like fudge and donuts best:-) )

Hopefully another reviewer offers their objective opinion, but I'm sure they'll say that this book is a great read. As Amy Sedaris says, "Buy it!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Current nutritional advice, good recipes, entertaining read, March 2, 2011

What a great book. It's really entertaining to read, as the author keeps things interesting with her humor and writing style. The information on what to eat / what not to eat is up-to-date with the latest research (for example, you should eat fish, just not certain kinds). Chapters on "germ control" around the house, quick lists of foods to keep in your house, quick lists of no-no's, and more, are so helpful. The author has "been there" with pregnancy, cravings, nutritional needs, and more, and it shows.

I've tried a couple recipes, and they've been pretty mild. If you prefer more flavor in your foods, use the recipes as a base, and pump it up with more spices or extra seasoning. For good recipes, I prefer Eating for Pregnancy: The Essential Nutrition Guide and Cookbook for Today's Mothers-to-Be.

I'm reading several books on pregnancy nutrition, some of which are pretty intense and scholastic. This one is a short, easy, fun read that covers all the simple basics. If you don't want to become a nutrition or herbal healing expert, and just want the short scoop on how to feed your body and baby during pregnancy, this is the right book.

I was excited to order this book after I found out I was pregnant and read all the great reviews. All in all the book has some good recipes and info but I felt it was a little lacking on new nutrition information. Most of the info is stuff you can learn on babycenter.com. I felt the writing was a bit cheesy also.

Getting pregnant and maintaining a healthy pregnancy can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Frances Largeman-Roth has written a book that makes the importance of pre-natal nutrition easy to understand and extremely accessible. She prepares the reader from the pre-planning stages of pregnancy to the "big as a house" moments with humor, helpful nutritional/lifestyle hints and super yummy recipes that would soothe the wackiest of pregnancy cravings. Feed the Belly would be a spectacular gift for newly expectant moms as the information provided is current, hip, healthful and most of all fun to read.
