Don't let the title deceive you. When I leafed through this book at a thrift store in 2004, I decided to risk the 25 cent price written on the inside cover. I found a wealth of information on general nutrition useful to anyone who wants to improve their health by eating healthy. The presentation in the first chapter will seem rather strange (The 5 Levels of Health) until you remember that Dr. Smith is a pediatric physician who must prescribe treatments based on what he sees in patient visits. The arrangement is very helpful for discerning the difference between symptoms that can be treated at home, and those that demand an immediate trip to the doctor (or emergency room).
Chapter 2 is basic nutrient information for adults as well as children. It was written 22 years after Adelle Davis's book, and people in general were still not paying much attention to nutrition. It is now 28 years after Dr. Smith's book, and things aren't much different. The gem I have found only in this book is the term "antinutrients" and its definition: "a substance that, when consumed, in and of itself increases the body's need for more nutrients." Examples he gives are refined sugar, excessive carbohydrates and artificial additives. He insists it is useless to try specific supplements when a review of the patient's eating habits reveals that he is consuming large quantities of antinutrients.
Chapter 3 introduces the prevention diet, which refers to general eating patterns everyone should follow as part of a lifetime program of good nutrition. The remaining chapters deal with specific problems with explanations of possible causes as well as possible treatments. Dr.

I wished I had notified the author in 1979 when my children were experiencing symptoms, but I did read the book and was successful in managing their symptoms which were the worst being seizure activity that started with my three year old son,who was not febrile at the time ,also a bed wetter, and both my younger children were not able to fall asleep in a timely manner. So when I implemented his suggestions the symptoms just disappeared completely. It took one week for the bedtime to change from 1030pm to 0830pm. and the seizure activity changed from grandmal to petite mal seizures only for the next two yrs and only during the holidays when my son was allowed to eat like his previous diet. So now once in awhile this story comes up and they are grown and have brought up my grandchildren with the goal toward feeding their children in a nutritonally based manner ,also by paying close attention to their responses to their food intake. I often think of these times and I am oh so thankful for his help If any of his family read this you should be proud that the Dr had made this valuable information available I am a registered nurse who also passed this info to those who would also benefit. . Sincere Thanks from Jimmy Leanne Chrissy and their parents Virginia and James

This is a very informative book I purchased, when my daughter was small back in the 80's. I located it on Amazon to aid her in raising my grandson. It has so much information about vitamins and minerals to enhance your life. It addresses concerns over childhood maladies, such as bedwetting, A D D,etc. There are dietary suggestions ,also. Dr. Smith had a short noontime program where he gave out helpful advice on everyday health issues concerning your children.

I purchased this book for my co-worker, who has a child with ADHD. I had a copy of this when it first came out, and I believe it has good guidelines for those with children with either allergies or other types of food sensitivities. If one can't get a handle on a behavioral problem, perhaps you should look into the possibility of a food sensitivity. Dr. Smith includes good suggestions for healthy alternatives to junk food.

I read this book in the early '70's when Dr. Smith was appearing on early morning television shows as a nutrition and medical consultant. Its contents helped my family to identify and avoid the effects of many food allergies. There were symptoms among my family members that I would never have identified as allergic reactions without having read his listing of possible allergic symptoms, but, sure enough, when we eliminated or rotated the foods associated (which this book also helped me figure out) the symptoms disappeared. We have enjoyed far greater health since reading this book than we would otherwise have had. Dr. Smith writes in a readable and engaging way.
