Truly written by a family man,

I too first saw this book at the public library and afterwards had to have it for my own. This book has really given me a lot of range for cooking veggie. Most veggie cookbooks call for things you can only find in specialty stores and yield dishes that husbands nor children will touch. I have really appreciatted a veggie cookbook that also comments on how to get you kid to like veggie food. It made me happy to find a pizza SECTION instead of some off the wall pizza recipe! This is a great cookbook for veggie and non-veggie families alike as it truly considers time, taste and expense.

Fast becoming my favorite cookbook...,

As a long time vegetarian with two small children, I'm always looking for ways to make good healthy veggie coooking "family friendly". This cookbook succeeds marvellously! In a few short months the pages have become well loved--the tahini dressing is now a staple in our fridge, the mushroom/wild rice soup (vegan, at that!) in much demand in the winter months. I have yet to make something that didn't turn out delicious!
Haedrich has an enjoyably readable style, and the anecdotes about his children's likes and dislikes and family traditions make this a "read it cover to cover" cookbook. There are plenty of suggestions about how to modify recipes for picky kids (perish the thought!), or how to perk up the same recipe to make it more "grown up". I love the author's understanding of what it is really like to cook with a family--no pristine test kitchen recipes here. If you are looking for delicious, hearty, healthy and kid-friendly dishes, this is an absolute gem!

This book makes it EASY to be a vegetarian!,

My husband and I have only been vegetarians for three years and this book certainly contributed to our success when we were first starting. The recipes are incredible, hearty and traditionally-based. The ratings of many dishes by his family add to the charm of the book as well and are really good indicators of how delicious the item is going to be to you and to your children. We highly recommend this cookbook to any family - you don't have to be vegetarian to love these dishes!

My most used cookbook!,

This is a great book for simple, healthy vegetarian meals. I love the broccoli polenta quiche and the vegetarian ruben! I have tons of vegetarian cookbooks that I've collected over the years but this one and the Vegetarian Times Complete Cookbook are the ones I keep out on my countertop for easy access. Receipes are easy to make and very creative. I have been a vegetarian for 15+ years and was pleasantly surprised to find new, tasty receipes that I had not seen in other books. Even my mother who is an expert cook but not a vegetarian thought this book was a keeper! Highly recommended.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!,

I've been transitioning my family to a vegetarian diet for years. It has been difficult since my husband is a meat guy who still eats franks and sausage on a regular basis. My kids are semi-vegetarian, except my 5-year-old, who declared himself a true vegetarian six months ago due to a love of animals. All other cookbooks seem geared towards sixties hippies, with foreign and exotic ingredients that scare my mainstream husband and picky kids. Then, I found Ken's book. The recipies are delicious, easy and sumptuous. They use wholesome, kid- (and husband-)friendly ingredients that would, for the most part, be used in an "ordinary" recipe. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The best family vegetarian cookbook I've read!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family (Paperback)
I've been a vegetarian for over eight years. I now have 2 children, and it's been a struggle to find recipes that they will eat. This is the book I've been looking for! It is a realistic approach to feeding a family vegetarian-style meals without breaking your pocket book or using weird ingredients that you can never find at your local grocery store. I've tried several recipes from this book so far, and all have been winners. The only caution I would give is that some of the foods seem a little high-fat to me, but there is not a nutritional count done for each recipes, as I have seen in some other cookbooks. But that's the only complaint I have--overall, it's my favorite cookbook right now!

mediterranean relish and other wonders,

first of all, i am puzzled that one of the reviewers decided that mr. haedrich was not a vegetarian because of a cookbook he wrote - the man writes cookbooks for a living- i hardly think that should call his credibility into question...if i wrote a book about serial killers, it wouldn't make me one, would it? this is a great book, one which i use quite often, along with the laurel's kitchen books and diet for a small planet- the recipes are easy to follow, have ordinary ingredients, and, best of all, they are well-seasoned in terms of onion, garlic, herbs, etc. and they are, at least with my two veggie kids, even more child-friendly than mr. haedrich imagines - i have yet to find anything in the book that my teen-age son and daughter have to have altered (mediterranean relish with grilled fontina in pitas, for example, which i often serve for sunday lunch with yellow pepper-potato soup, disappears as if it were inhaled)- great sandwiches, pastas, pizzas, soups, salads, all meet the taste test with my husband and kids- i also confess to being a "closet cookbook reader for enjoyment", so naturally i prefer narrative cookbooks and his is quite interesting -all in all, almost anyone could find something to suit his/her situation, and discover that feeding the healthy vegetarian family is a great addition to a cookbook library

Practical, Kid-Friendly Cookbook,
By A Customer
This review is from: Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family (Paperback)
If you're looking for a healthy, easy, vegetarian cookbook that is kid-friendly, you found it!! Ken Haedrich's recipes are absolutely delicious, simple and creative. Every recipe I have made has been a winner! And unlike most cookbooks, I have not had to alter any recipes to make them delicious. The vegetarian chili is the best I've ever made or eaten! It's so child friendly, even our 3 year old tried it and went back for more. Ken creatively works vegetables into the dishes that most kids (and husbands) would not eat, but they come back for more servings. The recipes do not require a significant investment of time as do many other vegetarian cookbooks, but like all good meals, planning is necessary.

I bought this book based on the reviews I read. Lots of the recipes sound delicious and it has readily available ingredients. However, I am a simple cook, don't like a lot of ingredients or things that take a lot of prep. Most of these recipes have many, many ingredients. I am keeping it and I will use a few recipes, but it won't end up being a favorite go-to book. I am disappointed because it sounded so good in the reviews!

I love this cookbook and my family loves what I make with it. The recipes are easy, straightfoward, use familiar ingredients and every dish I have tried has come out perfectly. He includes a nice selection of vegan recipes which are nice to have since many vegetarian cookbooks use so much dairy.
