An essential amino acid is one which the body is unable to synthesize sufficiently for itself, and therefore must be provided in the diet. There are ten essential amino acids (EAA) that can be synthesized to some degree in the cecum and colon, but not in the quantities needed to meet the horse's needs. Based on studies which include research on other species, the essential amino acids for the equine are believed to be: lysine, methionine, tryptophan, valine, histidine, phenylalanine, leucine, isoleucine, threonine, and arginine.
