Review

... a practical guide to help parents understand sports nutrition in the kitchen and on the practice field. -- Susan M. Kleiner, PhD, RD, FACN, Author of Power Eating 2nd Ed.

Written like my favorite coaching manuals; the advice is clear, concise, readable and best of all - useable! -- Jan Smisek, former US Soccer National Staff Coach

From the Publisher

According to the latest 2000 statistics from Sporting Goods Manufacturers Assoc., there are nearly 14 million young athletes playing soccer under the age of 18 in the United States. That doesn't account for the millions playing basketball, baseball, football and other sports. Growing children need to eat wholesome food to stay healthy. Kids who participate in athletics need extra nutritional support. Yet, there is very little easy-to-read information about sports nutrition for kids. None that emphasizes a whole foods approach. Until now. Moon Smile Press is proud to present this much needed book for coaches, side-line parents and motivated kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got Kids Playing Two Sports? - Need to Optimizing Energy, September 5, 2005

This review is from: Feeding the Young Athlete: Sports Nutrition Made Easy for Players and Parents (Paperback)
Two kids, soccer and cross country, and problems keeping them fed enough during the fall athletic season. This book helps to identify the best bang-for-the-buck nutritious foods to keep them energized and performing. It details optimum schedules for the pregame/practice as well as post game/practice meals, snacks and hydration. The recipes are contrary to the typical American diet, and so what else is new? Now that they know what complex and simple carbs are and how they affect their levels of energy, at least they know the ice cream for post practice/game recovery isn't the best alternative. At least they are giving the bean dishes a try because they know that they are one of the best nutrient dense foods. The recipes are surprisingly good and I'm going to try more on my kids and expand their horizons.

A good book to use when you are trying to get 3000 calories/day into your children. The school lunch probably isn't going to cut it on game or meet days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eat better to play your best!, September 1, 2003

This review is from: Feeding the Young Athlete: Sports Nutrition Made Easy for Players and Parents (Paperback)
Serious and committed student athletes who want to become champions and top athletes in their sports understand the difference between talk and a serious athletic program.

One critically important and frequently overlooked aspect of a program to build a better athlete is most certainly nutrition.

Don't take your athletic gifts and your overall health for granted! US StudentAthletes recommends this approach as does Cynthia Lair, the author of this fine nutrition book. Prioritize your health by learning as much as you can about sound nutritional practices. Begin with "Feeding the Young Athlete."

Decisions athletes make now (youth and teenagers) about food, exercise and body weight impact you today and for the rest of your life.

Each sport places different physiological, neurological, and musculoskeletal demands upon the student-athlete's body. Understand how nutrition can assist you and support you with these various demands.

Lastly, also understand that each student-athlete has a unique body composition for performance. Don't try to achieve a body composition or weight based on someone else?s performance.

Learn all you can about sports nutrition and it will benefit you for the rest of your life.

Best of luck in all your sports!!!

I have owned this book for 1 year and it is well worn. The concepts are easy to understand and make sense. I have loaned this to our swim coaches and the mom of our local High school football star. The recipes are easy to prepare and most important...taste good. I really like the section on Team Dinners...lots of great suggestions. Buy two right away because people borrow this little book all the time.
