Book Description

August 2003
Eric White's paintings tour a netherworld populated by movie stars, political figures, and ordinary people stretched and distorted and placed in bizarre landscapes but always disturbingly recognizable. Dubbed the "anti" Norman Rockwell, White employs a meticulous melding of hyperrealism and surrealism to make his dark dreams. Typical of his work is "Critical Path," a black-comic blast at the Hollywood dream machine. Here Dorothy from the The Wizard of Oz is shown brushing the teeth of a terrifying oversized Toto. With over 100 illustrations, this book sumptuously surveys the past decade of White's achievements.

More About the Author

Eric White (b. Ann Arbor, MI, 1968) received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1990, and has shown extensively in galleries and museums around the world including Freight + Volume, Clementine, and Feigen Contemporary in New York, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris, and The MACRO Museum in Rome. Relying heavily on the dream-state, metaphysics, and 1940s era Hollywood for inspiration, White examines the boundaries of human perception in conceptually complex and expertly rendered oil paintings. A collection of his work, "It Feeds Itself," was published in 2003, followed by a book based on his solo exhibition "Who Are Parents?" in 2005. He currently lives and works in New York City.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!, December 5, 2003

I loved this book! The paintings are amazing, the design is beautiful, the writings by Gail Zappa and Viggo Mortensen are wild and there's a cool "inspirations" list in the back that really gives an idea of where the artist is coming from. Anyone who is a fan of Eric White's work should get this book. But I think it will also appeal to anyone with an interest in figurative painting or art in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird but wonderfulll!!!, June 11, 2004

Hoo-eee! is what I said when I got through looking at this book. I didn't actually say it, on account I was in an 'alternative' bookstore in my godniece's neighborhood, and I didn't want all those howyoucallits looking crosswise. These pitchers are beautiful, strange, and haunting, like in the way LaToya Janckson is. Imagine those big-eyed kid paintings only if painted by the drippy-clock guy, or if he was on goofy tablets. At anyhoo, if you like surreal art dont miss this one. I dont know what they teach at Rhode Island art school these days but it aint "Draw Tippy!"
