5.0 out of 5 stars Hippie first aid kit: rolling papers, matches, patchouli, mouthwash and Visine, June 16, 2009

This review is from: Feel the Buzz: Spacin (Audio CD)
SIMITAR's FEEL THE BUZZ - SPACIN' is a nice mx of Top 40 hits, FM faves and nifty obscurities. ADD transfer quality is most fine.

MIND BUZZES:
It's not often that the edited "single" version of a song is superior to the original album cut. The opening and closing tracks are fine examples of exceptions to a supposedly hard and fast rule...

Here, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is the under 3-minute 45 rpm side that mercifully spares the listener from the deadly dull drum and organ noodling of the 17 minute LP cut.

"Season of the Witch" from the Vanilla Fudge RENAISSANCE set is by comparison on this CD the full-length LP recording, which because of Mark Stein's "Here we sit emerged in a liquid sea of love..." soliloquy plumbs the darkest depths of pretension. In this case, less would've been MUCH better, as the truncated single so well illustrates.

The Rascals offering, "See" is the title number from their still-overlooked album of the same name.

Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" is "quite rightly" monaural here.

A personal memory from autumn '68:
In my high school, certain privileged kids were allowed to play music over the campus-wide PA system until 8 am. One morning, some *genius* spun "The Pusher" from the STEPPENWOLF debut LP... That act of radicalism instantly ended forever our little pre-class radio station.

To stay in a personal vein--
This reviewer thoroughly enjoyed listening to 14 long-ago faves in the old-fashioned way: with over-the-ear headphones. If you can recall when these songs were current, I think you too will find them pleasurable, no matter *how* you take 'em in. Remember though: that other stuff is STILL illegal!

Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BOGART THIS DISC!, December 12, 2005

Jukebox Dave (RECORD TOWN, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Feel the Buzz: Spacin (Audio CD)
FEEL THE BUZZ/SPACIN'-VARIOUS ARTISTS: If you'll pardon the pun, this is a clever "pot-pourri" concerning America's fave pastime, and I don't mean hittin' the ol' horsehide. Classic psychedelic fare such as Donovan's MELLOW YELLOW (and by way of Vanilla Fudge, his SEASON OF THE WITCH), the single length edit of Iron Butterfly's IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA, and one shot garage band Count Five's PSYCHOTIC REACTION are just some of the too-cool-for-school "hits" here. You also get to ingest Hoyt Axton's anti-drug anthem THE PUSHER from Steppenwolf, the humorous haze of Commander Cody's DOWN TO SEEDS AND STEMS AGAIN, and Love's frenzied freak-out 7 AND 7 IS. This is high grade stuff. Indulge thyself.

RATING: FIVE TOKES OVER THE LINE

5.0 out of 5 stars The grateful dead rule, June 7, 1999

The Dead and Iron Butterfly work very well together unlike the disappointing team of Dyan and the dead. This CD is sweet and I think you should give it a try
