Editorial Reviews

Another fitting release from Jasmine further highlighting the talent of one of Hollywood s great stars from the 30 s and 40 s. Consistently as good as our previous release JASCD 105/6, this set presents the rest of Alice s film soundtrack recordings such as "I Feel A Song Coming On" & "Who Killed Maggie". Digitally re-mastered by Tall Order Mastering with compilation and annotation by Geoff Milne. See Also: JASCD105/6 - Got My Mind On Music

5.0 out of 5 stars Filling in the gaps on Alice Faye, March 2, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: I Feel A Song Coming On [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] 2CD SET (Audio CD)
Alice Faye was a major film star and songstress for the period 1935 to 1945 but she ceased making commercial recordings in 1937 as her stardom skyrocketed. She introduced many hits during her career and most of them can only be heard via soundtrack material. If you are not familiar with her warm smooth contralto, you may be in for a pleasant surprise.

This collection, a companion to an earlier double CD set, has filled in the gaps in her soundtrack recordings available on CD. The CD easily demonstrates her skills, whether the number be swing or a ballad and the sound quality is good. For the first time, songs from such films as "Your a Sweetheart", "Every Night at Eight" and "Lillian Russell" can be heard. Those who have seen her rendition of a forgotten song "So It's Love" in the former film will have never forgotten it. Now at least you can hear it.

For Faye fans, the CD is compulsory listening.

A wonderful CD- Most of the source of the tracks are from films, but at least they are cleaned and edited nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vocal Delights From A Great Movie Star, July 14, 2007
This review is from: I Feel A Song Coming On [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] 2CD SET (Audio CD)
Alice Faye was in great demand for movies during the thirties, but that is inadequately reflected in her studio recordings, which amounted to less than two dozen during that decade. To overcome that deficiency, Jasmine have compiled this collection of soundtrack material from twenty films, dating between 1934 and 1943, which complements their earlier 2-CD set "Got My Mind On Music" (JASCD 105/6).

Inevitably, the songs themselves are sometimes preceded (and occasionally interrupted) by dialogue, and the acoustic is more open, but it was not difficult to adjust to that. I particularly enjoyed Charles Previn's arrangement of "Scraping The Toast", and the courtroom scene preceding Miss Faye's all-too-brief parody of "When You And I Were Young, Maggie".

There is a profusion of delights here, including duets with James Dunn, Dick Powell, Tony Martin and Don Ameche, to name but a few, and a 12-page booklet giving essential background details. This is an essential acquisition for fans of the delectable Miss Faye, and should appeal to devotees of the Hollywood musical also.
