Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

In an ideal world, a primer on feeling good just wouldn't be necessary. But thankfully, the jubilantly goofy Todd Parr knows that we could all use a tip or two from time to time, no matter how old we are.

Just as he did in Do's and Don'ts, The Okay Book, and his other titles (16 and counting), Parr keeps it super simple, with fat lines, bold colors, and a repetitively cheery, often silly message. His words get some smiles here and there ("Brushing your hair with a lion feels good," "Making sounds like a monkey feels good"), but it's the vibrant, uncluttered, kid-style illustrations and the way that Parr juxtaposes them with the text that makes this book such fun. "Making a new friend" accompanies a fat, happy pig holding hands with a skunk sporting a thin red smile; "Watching your grandma and grandpa dance feels good" sits above a couple of funky, freaky grandparents doing a dance that can only be described as "the Keith Haring."

Parr closes the book a little philosophically, with a handwritten "Love, Todd" note: "It feels good to think about all the things that make you feel good. Rubbing my dog's tummy makes me feels good--and him, too. What things make you feel good?" In a kids' book, it's easy for simple to become simply insubstantial, but Parr's enthusiasm carries the day--and if you can be made to feel good, you will. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

From Publishers Weekly

Children's physical and emotional wellbeing take center stage in a trio of fall titles. The first, The Feel Good Book by Todd Parr, offers observations about experiences that give children a glow: "Reading a book under a tree feels good" and "Watching your grandma and grandpa dance feels good"; helping others also merits several mentions ("Showing the new kid around feels good"). Parr's signature illustrations, bordered by thick black lines and filled in with retro tangerines and mauves, are cheerful and bright. Ages 4-8.

More About the Author

I like the fog
I like sea lions
I like to paint
My favorite color is Blue
My favorite food is macaroni and cheese

I spent my childhood in a small town in Wyoming. It was a great place to grow up but I knew the world was out there waiting for me.

In high school, art was a passion of mine, but I failed art class. Because of that failure, I lacked the self-confidence to pursue it further. But it wasn't all my teachers fault.

I worked at many things before finally coming back to my original dream of painting, but again I faced rejection. Despite the rejection, I continued on with my work because I knew being an artist was what I wanted to do with my life.

After not having success with galleries, I was able to show my work at one of Wolfgang Puck's restaurants, Postrio, in San Francisco, where I have lived for the past 13 years. With a little luck and persistence, this exhibit led to many other things, like creating merchandise for Macys, and then on to my own line of clothing for kids.

I first got into children's publishing in 1998. I was able to take the messages that are part of my art and put them in a simple reading about acceptance, differences and empowerment for kids to feel better about themselves in a simple, fun way.

I have a lot of fun creating my books and I'm proud to know they are helping someone feel better about themselves in a silly, fun way.

Here are some of the fun, cool things that have happened to me and my books:

My work was displayed in the windows of FAO Schwarz in NYC and San Francisco, with interior displays of some of my product, including my first four books.

Todd Parr Shops within Toys R Us Japan were launched at all 101 stores with products exclusively available in Japan.

My Books have won several awards and have been featured on The Rosie O'Donnell show. Currently I have written and illustrated 28 books with two more for 2007 and 2008.

In 2004, I appeared in a Panasonic commercial and print ad.

I have partnered with Target, Reach Out and Read, People Magazine and several other organizations to promote reading.

In November 2005, my children's preschool show, ToddWorld premiered on TLC and Discovery Kids. The show has since been nominated for an Emmy and has won several other awards including the iParenting Media Award and the 2005 Humanitas Award for the episode entitled "Who's Your Best Friend"?. The Bronze medal in the New York Film Festival and an award for "Pizza on Earth" in the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. ToddWorld is now airing in almost every country around the world with a second season is in the works.

With the support of my family, especially my Dad and Grandma, I have been very successful but I do have another passion. I'd like to own my own restaurant!

As my Grandma used to say:
"You're a little lost now but I know you'll find your way".

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the close-minded, June 17, 2004
This review is from: The Feel Good Book (Hardcover)
I think this book is great as our other Todd Parr books are. My 4 year old loves them. These books are about real life, happy and sad. It contradicts the old way of thinking, that feelings are wrong and should be discouraged. It encourages children to act like children and maybe for some adults to let their hair down and lighten up. Another fun book from Todd!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE FEEL GOOD BOOK, February 26, 2008
This review is from: The Feel Good Book (Hardcover)
I am a Kindergarten teacher, and I use "The Feel Good Book" for a Health lesson. This book is so motivating, and it's excitingly colorful with fantastic pictures that go along with the mentioned feeling on that page. The illustrations look child drawn and really catch your eye. If possible, the children and I act out the gesture after reading each page. For example, the second page states that "Eating carrots with a bunny feels good"; the students and I would pretend to eat carrots and smile. If the children know the words that I am reading, I allow them to join me (children love to read along with a teacher!). After the book is read, we recall and retell what made the characters in the book feel good. I then ask them what makes them feel good. They are to hold that thought in their mind and write it on paper and draw/color a supporting illustration. I then collect all of the student's papers, and put together our class' very own feel good book!
