5.0 out of 5 stars Just Heavenly....
I can't BELIEVE no one's ever written a review of this one before. This album is almost unbearably gorgeous!! Of course, everyone knows the title track, but honestly, the whole album holds up way better than it seems to be given credit for. "Early Ev'ry Midnite" and "Some Gospel According To Matthew" by themselves make it a must, not to mention...

3.0 out of 5 stars This was decent
The purpose of the disc was to hear Flack's rendition of Mister Magic (I was not disappointed).

The other tracks were solid, but not as good as any of her work with Donny Hathaway.

I can't BELIEVE no one's ever written a review of this one before. This album is almost unbearably gorgeous!! Of course, everyone knows the title track, but honestly, the whole album holds up way better than it seems to be given credit for. "Early Ev'ry Midnite" and "Some Gospel According To Matthew" by themselves make it a must, not to mention "Mr. Magic" and Stevie Wonder's "I Can See The Sun In Late December." This is music to dream by, or make love to, or dream about making love, or making love in a dream...get my drift? "Classic" doesn't even begin to describe this beautiful piece of work. Pop, R&B, jazz, whatever: labels are like a crutch used by those who are incapable of appreciating music itself more than any one type of it. Buy this CD now!

4.0 out of 5 stars MOODY, MIDNIGHT MAGIC, November 30, 2004

Roberta Flack, perhaps the most eloquent, tasteful vocalist/arranger of her day, delivers another set of mostly wonderful recordings on this bluesy-pop collection. The orchestrations are pure Roberta - the visceral rhythm section is sublime; the swelling strings often stir great emotion. Even the throwaway pop on this album - I Wanted It Too, Heartbreak Top Ten - are intensely listenable. And that hit tune, Feel Like Makin' Love, has a breezy, jazzy, timeless feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Big Surprise..., July 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Feel Like Makin Love (Audio CD)
I was emotionally touched by the title track. It has a sort of funky etherealness to it all that it makes it what it is. The guitar-playing, drum arrangement, and the twinkle-sounds make it a sure-fire sizzler for any happily married couple out there, old or young. It is a mighty ballad that makes this author quite warm inside. Ironically, my parents were still in grade school when this legendary song came out, and I heard it in one of my rare radio-recording sessions in New York. I fell in a strange, euphoric state, and I'm sure most will, too. Although its beat may seem repititive and almost hip-hoppish in a sense, it still comes perilously close to bringing a tear to my eye everytime I hear it. It is a classic this author may never forget...

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily Her Best, September 1, 2010

This is easily the best from Roberta Flack who had a haunting, smooth, sophisticated, voice. She wasn't the gritty soul singer of the day. In the 70's she had the freedom as a arranger, composer, musician in a genre that wasn't strictly controlled by corporate interest and demographics like today. Roberta who always drew you in with her unique love songs/ballads, but when you bought her albums, you were always treated to a fusion of soul/jazz/gospel that told you this is a serious woman. "Feel like Making Love" was the first album produced by her - by accident actually as there was trouble finding a producer and so she did it herself. She was so unsure of the success she used the pseudonym "Rubina Flake" as the Producer. She need not have worried.

My favorites are "Feel like Making Love", "Early Ev'ry Midnight" (was that sultry or what?), "Old Heartbreak Top Ten" (Probably one of the few dance numbers I ever heard her do), a whole new meaning to "Mr Magic", the too-short down-home "Some Gospel according to Mathew", and the Ethereal "I can see the Sun in Late December", which I saved for last because it broke the standards of the day. Soul artist were usually tied to 4 minutes tops, while this one lasted over 12 minutes. FM radio had come to maturity and it meant experimentation with longer cuts at higher sound quality (It was also called Album radio because it was played from the Album which meant a longer song and higher quality then playing from a 45). She was allowed the jazz musicians backing her off take off and turn it into a fusion instrumental.

After all these years, it still sends me.

Close your eyes and enjoy the ride through this mystical yet uncomplicated journey through time. For those who remember where you were the "first time" you heard this album, this will serve as a reminder of how an artist can transport you through beautiful lyric and haunting melody. This treasure will never grow old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roberta's Jazziest and at her best, April 19, 2006

My absolutely favorite Roberta album put together with some great jazz men backing her up. The title song is a classic but my favorite, Early Ev'ry Midnite makes you want to close your eyes, turn off the lights, light the candles and dance the night away with your romantic partner....way past midnight...then do like the title track says would probably come naturally. My only wish was this song be longer like 'I Can See The Sun in Late December', with more guitar work of Eric Gale. All these years I wish Roberta would come out with another jazzy sequel to this gem.....and I am still waiting. One of the dozen albums to take if I have to be stuck in a island.....
