YOW!!! The best of England's top Hitmakers of the '70's,
By
This review is from: Feel The Noize: Greatest Hits (UK) (Audio CD)
Slade was arguably England's top Pop/Rock band of the 1970's with Gosh knows how many #1's in a row and 20+ top 10's. This collection covers their career from the beginning to the end, with just a few minor hits from the middle period missing. Slade was never big in the US, possibly too Hard Rock for the US AM radio stations and too POP for FM. Probably just bad timing as Quiet Riot's version of Cum On Feel the Noize was a top 10 hit in the US in the '80's and Slade's own Run Runaway, (included here) was a top 20 hit here, also in the '80's. This is a must have for anyone who likes tuneful, quirky Hard Rock. Great Stuff!!!!!!

This is just absolutely GREAT rock and roll that I have been missing for the last twenty or so years! I first started listening to Slade in the early 70's and still don't understand why they didn't make it in the U.S.! Oh well somebody else's loss! I highly recommend this cd!

The better UK Version Cost Permitting But A Finer Tribute,

The same guys that remastered the Who re-releases were responsible for the remix of this fine collection that covers Slade better than the latter day US version Get Your Boots On..but this is a pricey import but worth it if you are looking for a quality compilation of these boys who added a touch of glitter and rock to the whole glam rock scene.
Forget the influence they had on some of the metal bands, Slade were foremost a bunch of tough working class rockers steeped in the UK tradition of either rocking out with solid uncomplicated but loud catchy chords, clever tunesmiths of ballroom music or doing lovely ballads like Paul McCartney himself, using pianos and strings when needed. Their parodies of using letters rather than words in their album and song titles were later copied by Prince and it's childishness was all in good fun and meant that way. Their singles are well captured here and if you never heard Noddy's voice this is a great place to start. The rest of the band rocks on..hard to believe, I saw them open for ZZ Top once in New York a long time ago....they should have headlined, I went to the gig to see Slade.

In the 90's were Hard Rock has died, with a few exceptions. Slade, "Feel the noize" is great reminder of a time when Hard Rock ruled. The Mastering of these songs from the 70's is excellent for the music technology of the 90's. For Rockers this CD is timeless.

I WAS EIGHTEEN WHEN I FIRST HEARD SLADE. I WAS HOOKED!I SAW THEM TWICE IN CONCERTAND BELIEVE ME, THEY COULDROCK THE HOUSE. UNFAIRLY, I THINK, THEY WERE CALLED AT ONE TIME THE NEXT BEATLES.THIS BAND WAS NOT THE BEATLES COME BACK TO LIFE. THEY WERE VERY SIMPLY A VERY GOOD BAR BAND THAT MADE IT AND BELIEVE ME, THEY COULD ROCK THE HOUSE!I WAS FRONT ROW AT THE SPECTRUM ARENA IN PHILADELPHIA FOR A SLADE CONCERT AND THEY BLEW THE ROOF OFF OF THE BUILDING.IT'S A SHAME THEY DIDN;T INCLUDE THE FIVE MINUTE TWENTY SECOND SLOW BALLADTYPE SONG " DARLING BE HOME SOON " TO THIS CD. IT'S THE ONLY SLOW SLADE SONG I CAN REMEMBER. AND A GOOD ONE ALSO. I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE FOUR BOYS ARE THESE DAYS BUT I WISH NODDY, DAVE, JIM AND DON THE BEST.AND THANK YOU FOR SOME GOOD ROCKIN' TIMES. YOU GUYS REALLY GOT US MOVING. I WONDER HOW MUCH OF A " RAVE " THET COULD CREATE AT A RAVE CONCERT TODAY. I THINK THE KIDS WOULD LOVESLADE!

Outstanding hits compilation from a unique band,

This is an outstanding compilation of hits from a one-of-a-kind English band. I still don't know why they never hit in the States because they recorded a slew of gems and were an exciting live band. I particularly liked hearing "Merry Xmas" for the first time, which was never played in Boston where I grew up, and the range of songs they produced through the ups and downs. Their musicianship is better than I recall, too. A great collection from an underappreciated group.

This was a rock band folks. Say what you will about their "lyrics", this group was pure ROCK AN ROLL. I saw them as one of the groups at the Largo Arena in Md opening for Aerosmith way back in 74 or 75. Actually, I came to see them and was not disappointed. Noddy Holder is COOL - STILL! This is a great CD to own if you are just getting into the glitter rock of the 70's.I have the lps and they are still among my faves to peruse.

Baby Baby Baby!!!!!!,
This review is from: Feel The Noize: Greatest Hits (UK) (Audio CD)
You gotta love Slade. With a propensity towards raucous raving, these guys were among the pivotal glam bands of the early 70s. The first 2/3 of this collection attest to the yobbish hellraising these guys invoked. And yet, it was all in good fun. The sing-along nature of the work clearly shows how, beneath the tough-yet-glittery veneer, sugar and jollyness was at the core. Like I said, the early and middle portions of this compilations consist of classic after classic after classic. Wonderful.
Their 1980+ output varies in quality. Some is as great as anything they put out in the 70s. Other stuff is terrible. "Run Runaway" is like BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" meets Little House on the Prairie. Terrible. But the rest isn't terrible. Overall, this set deserves 5 stars because it presents a great portrait of the band. It gives a greater emphasis to the good stuff, but it also acknowledges the highlights of their later days. And man, is the music great. Check it out. You'll love it.

Dumb but great fun!,

Good old silly, irreverent Slade never really caught on in the US, but their melodic early-70s glam rock sounds as energetic and fun today as it did back then, and this is the best collection of their works, including all of the Slade's hit singles from the early '70s, from 1971's "Get Down And Get With It" to 1975's "Thanks For The Memory (Wham Bam Thank You Mam)".
Slade scored a whopping 11 Top Five hits between 1971 and 1974 (five of which topped the charts), and they're all here. So are their latter-day chart entries, like 1983's #2 hit "My Oh My", but Slade never got better than they did at their stomping glitter-rock peak, and "Feel The Noize" captures them in all their glory, filled with Noddy Holder and Jim Lea's big, dumb, misspelled shout-along hits ("Look Wot You Dun", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me" and "Gudbuy T'Jane").

Slade - Feel The Noize: Greatest Hits (Polydor)
Back in the early 1970s, Slade were the first band I fell in love with. T-Rex may have been cooler and Bowie definitely weirder, but what does that matter when you're seven years old and the only access you've got to pop music is Ed Stewart's Saturday morning show and Top Of The Pops on a Thursday evening. In those days Slade lived on Top Of The Pops, churning out classic stomp pop singles, one after the other. All the hits are here, 21 top 30 singles including their half dozen number ones, and it all sounds bloody great a quarter century on. It's about time Slade received the respect they deserve and it's great to see this excellent compilation available. |
